Jackson County’s approval of state grant funding moves forward a $9.1 million project to repair and expand the area where corporate and other general aviation aircraft park at Rogue Valley International–Medford Airport.
The work centers on the airport’s corporate apron, which serves visiting business aircraft. County plans call for resurfacing approximately 27,000 square yards of asphalt and fully rebuilding another 8,000 square yards. The project also includes improvements to an adjacent hangar taxilane and the conversion of a grass island into pavement designed for heavier aircraft, creating a continuous connection to Taxiway B.
County officials identified a capacity problem beneath the existing pavement. Corporate jets using the airport have grown larger, and aircraft operating on parts of the apron routinely exceed the pavement’s designed weight capacity. The section slated for full reconstruction received a pavement condition rating of 55, classified as poor in the county’s grant application.
The improvements would give larger aircraft a stronger place to park and provide more room for aircraft movements on the ground. Jackson County also expects the expansion to add corporate parking capacity, an area where the airport falls short of an objective identified in the Oregon Aviation Plan.
For Southern Oregon residents, the project concerns the airport’s business aviation facilities, rather than its passenger terminal or airline gates. Its potential regional effect lies in the airport’s ability to accommodate visiting companies and aircraft operators whose planes require heavier pavement and adequate parking space. The county anticipates that the added capacity could support business travel and activity at the airport’s fixed-base operators, which provide services such as aircraft fueling.
The Oregon Department of Aviation funding is one piece of the project’s financing. Jackson County’s application estimated the total cost at $9.1 million and requested $150,000 from the state’s Critical Oregon Airport Relief program toward the required match for federal funding. The application listed approximately $8.53 million in anticipated Federal Aviation Administration funds and $418,750 in county funds. The amount in the county’s grant application should not be confused with the cost of the full project.
A separate federal airport infrastructure listing assigns $2 million to Medford for apron reconstruction, rehabilitation and pavement planning. Available federal records do not specify how every part of that listing aligns with the funding breakdown in the county’s state application.
The county’s application projected that reconstructed pavement would have a 20-year service life, while resurfacing would extend the life of other sections by at least 10 years. Its listed project period runs through June 2028. A current construction timetable has not been confirmed.
