A prolonged winter storm continues to impact Southern Oregon, forcing multiple school closures and delays for a third consecutive day. As snowfall and icy conditions persist, local districts are prioritizing student and staff safety by adjusting their schedules accordingly.
The Medford, Pinehurst, Butte Falls, Rogue River, Three Rivers, Klamath County, and Klamath Falls City school districts have all announced closures for Thursday, February 6. With road conditions remaining hazardous, school officials determined that keeping campuses closed was the safest option.
Meanwhile, other districts have opted for delayed starts, hoping to provide additional time for road clearing efforts. The Grants Pass School District 7 will begin elementary school classes at 10 a.m., with middle and high school students, including those enrolled in GPFLEX, starting at 10:30 a.m. Glendale School District has scheduled a 9:45 a.m. start, while Southern Oregon University will resume classes at 10 a.m.
Local authorities urge residents to remain cautious while traveling, as icy roads and reduced visibility continue to create dangerous conditions. Public works crews have been working around the clock to plow major roads and apply de-icing treatments, but side streets and rural routes remain treacherous.
Weather forecasts indicate that snowfall could taper off in the coming days, but freezing temperatures may prolong the risk of ice accumulation. Residents are advised to monitor school district websites and local news sources for further updates.
Emergency responders remind drivers to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary trips if possible. Officials also encourage checking on vulnerable community members, including the elderly and those without adequate heating.
As the region endures another day of winter disruptions, students and families are adapting to the ongoing weather challenges while hoping for a return to normal schedules soon.
