Grants Pass police have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting that left one teenager dead and another man seriously injured Wednesday evening, setting off a rapid, multi-agency investigation that stretched beyond county lines.
Emergency dispatchers began receiving calls at approximately 6:05 p.m. on March 25 reporting gunfire in the 800 block of Northeast E Street. Officers from the Grants Pass Police Department arrived alongside deputies from the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office and troopers with the Oregon State Police. At the scene, responders located two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds.
First responders, including Grants Pass Fire/Rescue and American Medical Response, provided immediate medical care before both victims were transported to Three Rivers Medical Center. Despite those efforts, an 18-year-old male later died from his injuries at the hospital. A second victim, a 24-year-old male, sustained serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Investigators quickly began interviewing witnesses, many of whom were still at or near the scene when officers arrived. Authorities determined that the suspect had fled immediately after the shooting in a vehicle, prompting an urgent search.
The Grants Pass Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit took the lead on the case, working in coordination with detectives from the Oregon State Police and prosecutors from the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office. As information developed, law enforcement agencies across the region assisted in tracking the suspect’s movements.
After several hours of investigation, authorities identified the suspect as Kyler Talbot, 21. Law enforcement located Talbot later that evening in a hotel room in neighboring Jackson County. He was taken into custody without incident during a coordinated operation involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and Grants Pass police officers.
Talbot was transported back to Josephine County and lodged at the county jail. He is currently facing charges of Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
While the investigation remains active, officials have not released additional details regarding the events leading up to the shooting or any possible relationship between the individuals involved.
Authorities emphasized the scale of cooperation involved in the case, noting assistance from multiple agencies including the Oregon State Police Southern Command, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, and the District Attorney’s Office.
