Yachats, Oregon, will once again celebrate its connection to the world of fungi this fall with the return of the Yachats Mushroom Festival, scheduled for October 17–19, 2025. The coastal town will become a hub for mushroom enthusiasts, scientists, food lovers, and curious visitors eager to learn more about the hidden networks that sustain life in the forests of the Pacific Northwest.
Beneath the soil of the surrounding woodlands, vast mycelial networks quietly recycle nutrients and foster growth in ways still not fully understood. This natural mystery forms the backdrop for the festival, which blends science, community, and culinary experiences into a three-day celebration. Organizers say this year’s theme, “The World of Mushrooms,” highlights the many roles fungi play in ecosystems, medicine, food, and culture.
The event opens Friday evening at the Yachats Commons with a mushroom-themed dinner prepared by local vendor Big Dog BBQ. Following the meal, noted author and mycologist Daniel Winkler will deliver the keynote lecture, “Fruits of the Forest,” offering insights into mushroom species, their ecological importance, and their traditional uses. Tickets are available for both the dinner and the keynote, with limited same-day sales expected.
On Saturday and Sunday, the festival expands into a variety of activities across Yachats. The Commons will host a vendor fair showcasing artisans, food creators, and crafters, all offering mushroom-inspired goods. The Commons lawn will feature the Mushroom Identification Hall, where members of the Lincoln County Mycological Society, Cascade Mycological Society, and North American Truffling Society will provide expert identification of specimens brought in by festivalgoers.
Educational opportunities will be a major part of the weekend, with free public talks by regional mycologists, ecologists, and naturalists. Workshops, which require advance registration and a small fee, will provide hands-on learning experiences for those wishing to deepen their knowledge of mushroom hunting, cooking, and cultivation. Guided walks through the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and the Cummins Creek Wilderness Area will also take place, led by naturalists who will highlight the diversity of fungi in coastal forests.
Adding a playful element to the weekend, the Mushroom Treasure Hunt will send participants onto local trails to discover hidden fungi and special surprises placed for the event. Meanwhile, restaurants throughout Yachats will join in by offering mushroom-inspired dishes, turning the entire town into an extension of the festival.
Organizers emphasize that mushrooms are more than a culinary delicacy. Beyond their presence on dinner plates, fungi are increasingly studied for their medicinal properties, potential in environmental cleanup, and crucial role in forest health. By breaking down toxins and recycling organic matter, mushrooms serve as one of nature’s most effective tools for sustaining balance in ecosystems.
The festival is organized by the Yachats Area Chamber of Commerce, with support from regional mycological societies. Visitors can find full schedules, ticket information, and details about workshops and walks at YachatsMushroomFestival.org.
As the fall rains return and the forests come alive with mushrooms, Yachats will once again invite the public to explore the fascinating and essential world of fungi, offering a weekend where science, food, and community come together in celebration.
