As tax season approaches, Grants Pass residents will once again have access to free, in-person tax assistance thanks to a partnership between the Grants Pass branch of the Josephine Community Library and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, commonly known as VITA. The collaboration is designed to ease the annual burden of tax filing for individuals and families who may not otherwise be able to afford professional preparation services.
Beginning February 10 and continuing through April 3, certified VITA volunteers will provide no-cost assistance at the Grants Pass library, located at 200 NW C Street. Services will be available on Tuesdays from 2 to 6 p.m. and on Fridays from 1 to 5 p.m., offering multiple opportunities each week for community members to seek help in a familiar and accessible setting.
On Tuesdays, tax services will be offered by appointment only and will focus on full tax preparation and filing. Fridays will also include scheduled appointments for filing, along with walk-in assistance for individuals who need help obtaining tax forms or who have general questions about tax-related issues. This flexible approach is intended to accommodate a wide range of needs, from straightforward filings to simple guidance and clarification.
The VITA program is geared toward individuals with relatively simple tax returns, including those whose income comes primarily from wages, Social Security benefits, or retirement distributions reported on 1099 forms. Volunteers participating in the program are certified and trained to prepare and electronically file both federal and state tax returns. Once completed, returns are typically processed and ready for pickup within about one week.
Participants are asked to come prepared with proper documentation to ensure an efficient appointment. Required materials include proof of identity, relevant tax forms, a Social Security card, and a copy of the previous year’s tax return. Having these items available helps volunteers complete filings accurately and reduces delays.
Library officials say the partnership reflects a broader commitment to supporting the practical needs of the community, particularly during a time of year that can be stressful for many households. By hosting the service at the library, organizers aim to remove barriers such as cost, transportation, and access to reliable information, while reinforcing the library’s role as a trusted community hub.
Appointments for full tax preparation must be scheduled directly through the VITA program. Community members can call 541-223-9597 or visit joco-freetaxes.com to reserve a time. Additional information about library programs and services is available at josephinelibrary.org, by emailing info@josephinelibrary.org, or by calling 541-476-0571.
With the filing deadline approaching, organizers encourage residents who may qualify to schedule early, noting that demand for free tax assistance often increases as April draws closer.
