Oregon’s first trip to Stillwater became one of the earliest major upsets of the college football season Saturday as Oklahoma State overwhelmed the No. 6 Ducks statistically and emerged with a 39-31 victory at Boone Pickens Stadium.
The result bore little resemblance to the matchup Oregon dominated one year earlier. The Ducks defeated Oklahoma State 69-3 in Eugene last season and entered Saturday favored by 23½ points against a Cowboys program that had lost 21 consecutive games to FBS opponents.
Oklahoma State instead produced 554 yards of offense, nearly twice Oregon’s 281, and controlled the football for more than 36 minutes. The Cowboys ran 83 offensive plays, repeatedly extended possessions and limited Oregon to 59 plays.
Quarterback Drew Mestemaker drove the Oklahoma State offense with 317 passing yards and two touchdowns while adding 109 yards and another score on the ground. Caleb Hawkins rushed for 110 yards, while Wyatt Young finished with 121 receiving yards.
Oregon struggled to establish comparable offensive production. Quarterback Dante Moore completed 14 of 29 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns, while Dierre Hill Jr. led the Ducks with 74 rushing yards. Evan Stewart recorded 78 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Despite being outgained 353-101 during the first half, Oregon reached halftime trailing only 24-17 because its defense created two pivotal turnovers. Devon Jackson returned an interception 96 yards for a touchdown, while Matayo Uiagalelei’s interception return to the Oklahoma State 1-yard line positioned Oregon for another score.
Those defensive plays prevented Oklahoma State from converting its early statistical dominance into a larger advantage and kept Oregon within position to recover after halftime.
The Ducks eventually erased a 10-point second-half deficit and briefly moved ahead 31-30 early in the fourth quarter. Oklahoma State, however, answered immediately and reclaimed control behind Mestemaker, whose rushing touchdown restored the Cowboys’ advantage.
Oregon was unable to recover again. The Ducks finished 0-for-3 on fourth-down attempts, committed seven penalties for 66 yards and lost a fumble on their final possession. Oklahoma State added a late field goal before exhausting the remaining clock.
The defeat ended Oregon’s 12-game road winning streak, which had been the longest active run in the country entering Saturday. It also marked the Ducks’ first loss to an unranked opponent under head coach Dan Lanning.
For Oklahoma State, the victory ended a prolonged run of losses against FBS competition and reversed one of the most lopsided results on Oregon’s 2025 schedule. The 74-point swing in margin between the two meetings underscored how dramatically the matchup changed in one season.
Oregon falls to 1-1 and returns to Eugene to face Portland State on Friday, Sept. 18, before traveling to USC the following week.
