Clarion Theatre Company is preparing to bring “Two Great Musicals, One Great Show!” to the Grants Pass Performing Arts Center while introducing a new logo that connects its Christian mission with its work onstage. The stained-glass design incorporates a window, light and a cross, with each element representing a different aspect of the company’s approach to drama and music.
The upcoming production will feature actors from the company; the Clarion is encouraging advance ticket purchases, which it says will save patrons a few dollars. The performance brings the company’s emphasis on storytelling through music and theatre to a local audience.
The new logo draws its central image from stained-glass windows traditionally found in churches and cathedrals. Clarion selected the window for its connection to storytelling, pointing to the role biblical images played in helping congregations learn and remember religious accounts when many worshippers could not read.
Those windows communicated through scenes and figures, giving viewers a visual representation of stories they heard in worship. Clarion connects that practice with the work of theatre, where actors, movement and music give an audience a way to follow a story through performance. The company identifies that shared use of visual storytelling as the first meaning behind its design.
For Clarion, the connection also reflects the Christian beliefs guiding its artistic work. The company describes its purpose as telling stories through drama and music and says it believes good stories can reflect the goodness of God and the biblical account of redeeming love. The stained-glass image places that understanding of storytelling at the center of its new identity.
The window’s function supplies a second meaning. Clarion says the passage of light through a window represents its hope that the stories it performs will communicate God’s love to the community. That purpose extends to individual audience members as well as the broader public attending its productions.
Within the design, light connects the physical qualities of a window with the company’s religious mission. Clarion describes its theatrical work as a means of sharing that faith through the experience of watching a story unfold. Music and drama are the forms through which it seeks to carry out that purpose.
The cross is the third element and the design’s direct expression of Christian belief. According to Clarion, it represents the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, atonement for sin and eternal redemption. Its placement within the window connects those beliefs with the storytelling and light represented by the other parts of the logo.
Clarion identifies itself as a theatre company rather than a church. Its stated purpose includes supporting the church’s presence in the world through the performing arts, with singing, dancing and acting serving as the means of that work. The logo brings those activities and religious commitments together in one image.
The design gives the company a visual identity tied specifically to its mission. Its explanation assigns a separate purpose to each component while connecting all three to the same work: presenting stories through performance that reflect its Christian convictions.
For local patrons, the next opportunity to attend a Clarion production will be “Two Great Musicals, One Great Show!” at the Grants Pass Performing Arts Center. The company is promoting the performance with a video featuring three participating actors and an invitation to purchase tickets ahead of the show.
The production and new logo introduce two aspects of Clarion’s work to the community: the performers preparing to take the stage and the beliefs the company says guide what it presents. As preparations continue for the Grants Pass performance, the stained-glass window will serve as the company’s new emblem for its combination of faith, music and theatrical storytelling.
