The Grants Pass High School Theatre Department is preparing to open its fall musical production of “HONK! Jr.,” a lively adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless tale “The Ugly Duckling.” The show will run from November 14 through November 23, 2025, at the GPHS Performing Arts Center, featuring a blend of talent from both the high school and South Middle School.
“HONK! Jr.” tells the story of a young duckling who doesn’t quite fit in and embarks on a heartfelt journey to discover who she truly is. The musical explores universal themes of self-acceptance, diversity, courage, and kindness, all through catchy songs, colorful costumes, and spirited performances. Designed to engage audiences of all ages, the show combines humor and emotion in equal measure, offering a thoughtful message about embracing one’s uniqueness in a world that often prizes conformity.
The production is directed and choreographed by Erica Bury, whose creative vision has helped shape a vibrant and accessible performance. Music direction is led by Katie Jarvis Shomler, while Wayd Drake handles technical direction and set design. Lucia Perkins brings the show to life through her costume design, Connor Moore contributes his skills as student lighting designer, and stage management is under the capable direction of Clara Bury.
Supporting the production are Julia Cuppy, the Director of Theatre at GPHS, and Tianna Eddy, the school’s theatre producer. Together, they oversee a talented ensemble of 40 high school students from Thespian Troupe 2354, joined by ten students from South Middle School’s Junior Thespian Troupe. Additionally, students from North Middle School will assist as part of the house crew, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the collaborative spirit of the district’s theatre community.
The program highlights the ongoing partnership between the local troupes affiliated with the International Thespian Society, a national organization that honors excellence in theatre arts education. Through the leadership of instructors such as Jael Hanson at South Middle School, Jennifer Lynde at North Middle School, and Cuppy and Eddy at the high school level, the district’s combined theatre program engages roughly 350 students each year. These students participate in state and national events while also bringing productions like “HONK! Jr.” to local audiences, demonstrating a continuing commitment to arts education and community enrichment.
Adding to the excitement, a special “Family Day” is scheduled for Saturday, November 22. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with games, crafts, and a petting zoo presented by Farm Life. At 11:30 a.m., the theatre will host a sensory-friendly performance of “HONK! Jr.” designed for audiences who prefer a more accommodating environment. This modified show will feature adjusted sound levels, gentle lighting, and advanced cues for moments that might otherwise surprise or startle. Admission to the Family Day festivities is included with tickets to that day’s performance, although snacks and pony rides will be available for an additional small charge.
Performances will be held at 7 p.m. on November 14, 15, and 21, with matinee shows at 2 p.m. on November 16 and 23. The sensory-friendly performance on November 22 will follow the morning’s family activities. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, with free admission for children five and under. A special family pack is also available for $40 to make the event more affordable for larger households.
Tickets and additional information can be found at www.GPHSTHEATRE.com. The production is presented through special arrangement with Concord Theatricals.
Through its colorful storytelling and heartfelt performances, “HONK! Jr.” promises to deliver an uplifting experience for the entire community.
