(GRANTS PASS, OR) – South Middle School is set to embark on its first-ever theatre season this fall, marking a significant milestone for the school’s newly established theatre club. The student-led initiative, which began during the 2023-2024 school year, has grown from a small group of passionate students into a full-fledged program that will stage two productions during the 2024-2025 school year.
The theatre club was born out of a desire among students to perform for their school and community. Over the past year, these young thespians dedicated themselves to learning the fundamentals of theatre, engaging in fundraising efforts, and securing sponsorships to make their vision a reality.
“We are thrilled to offer this new opportunity for our students to explore their creative talents,” said Robert Lingo, Principal of South Middle School. “The theatre club teaches students skills beyond the stage, like collaboration, problem-solving, and building confidence.”
Under the guidance of their advisor, Jael Hanson, the students spent the previous school year immersing themselves in the world of theatre. They were actively involved in designing the club’s first season, selecting two plays that promise to entertain both their peers and the wider community.
The fall production, titled 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse by Don Zolidis, is an apocalyptic comedy that promises to leave audiences in stitches. This production, made possible through special arrangements with Playscripts, Inc., is scheduled for October 29th and 30th at 7:00 PM.
Following the fall performance, the spring production will be Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Your Teachers (but were afraid to ask) by Jason Pizzarello. This play takes a humorous look at the lives of teachers, answering questions students might be too shy to ask in the classroom. Tickets for the fall production are currently available.
“The students have worked hard to get to this point, and their dedication and passion for theatre shines through,” said Jael Hanson, Club Advisor. “I’m excited to see the productions come to life on stage, and for the club to continue growing over the coming years.”
The South Middle School Theatre Club is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in all aspects of theatre production, from acting and directing to set design and stage management. The club is open to all South Middle School students who have an interest in theatre, offering them a platform to develop their skills and express their creativity.
As the curtain rises on this new chapter for South Middle School, the theatre club is poised to become a vibrant part of the school’s cultural life, bringing students together through the shared experience of theatre.
