GRANTS PASS, OR – The enforcement of camping bans against homeless individuals in Grants Pass remains on hold as Disability Rights Oregon (DRO) awaits a court response to its latest legal motion. The organization has filed multiple motions seeking to suspend enforcement, with the most recent one on 3/3/2025, now under judicial review. A decision has yet to be issued.
The legal challenge stems from the city’s regulations on public camping, which Grants Pass has attempted to enforce. However, DRO contends that penalizing individuals for sleeping in public spaces violates their rights and has petitioned the court to intervene.
City officials maintain that they will enforce the regulations once legally permitted. However, as the latest motion is pending a response, no immediate action can be taken. Until the court rules, tents and temporary shelters will remain in parks and other public areas.
There is no set timeline for the court’s decision. The ruling will determine whether the city can proceed with enforcement or if legal obstacles will further delay its efforts. As both sides await the outcome, the situation remains in legal limbo.
