GRANTS PASS, OR — Josephine County’s Granite Hill Cemetery, a site rich with pioneer history and deep community roots, has unveiled its latest addition: columbarium walls for the respectful placement of cremated remains. This new feature provides families a dignified, enduring alternative to traditional in-ground burial.
The columbarium walls have been thoughtfully constructed to complement the peaceful environment of the cemetery while providing a lasting memorial space. These structures offer individual niches designed to house cremation urns, allowing loved ones to rest in a location that honors the past and serves the present needs of a growing community. With cremation becoming increasingly common, this addition provides a much-needed option for local families looking for meaningful ways to commemorate their loved ones.
Nestled alongside Upper River Road, Granite Hill Cemetery spans 40 serene acres, framed by the tranquil mountains that define the Rogue Valley landscape. The cemetery is not only a final resting place but a historic landmark, serving as the burial ground for many of the area’s earliest settlers—some of whom journeyed to Oregon via covered wagon.
Though officially established in 1881, the site was used as a burial ground long before that due to its proximity to a granite mine. The abundance of decomposed granite in the area gave the cemetery its name and lends a timeless, natural character to the site. The first recorded burial was Millie Pearl Weidman in December 1889, whose gravesite remains a testament to the cemetery’s early years.
Today, Granite Hill Cemetery is divided into four distinct sections or additions, with each holding a part of the region’s storied past. Among its nearly 150 years of burials are more than 700 military veterans whose service spans from the War of 1812 to the Vietnam War. The presence of veterans from nearly every major American conflict underscores the cemetery’s importance not just as a final resting place, but as a monument to American history and sacrifice.
The cemetery is managed by the Josephine County Parks and Recreation Department, which oversees both plot sales and columbarium niche availability. This new offering is part of the county’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and enhancing one of its most historically significant landmarks.
Granite Hill Cemetery is more than just a burial ground—it is a place of remembrance, reflection, and community heritage. The introduction of the columbarium walls ensures that the cemetery continues to serve future generations while honoring those who came before.
For families interested in purchasing burial plots or columbarium niches, or simply to learn more about the cemetery’s services and history, the Josephine County Recreation Office can be reached by phone at (541) 474-5285 or in person during business hours at 125 Ringuette Street, Grants Pass.
Granite Hill Cemetery stands as a quiet yet powerful symbol of Josephine County’s past, and with these new enhancements, it continues to offer a peaceful and respectful place for remembrance and legacy.
