GRANTS PASS, OR — The Grants Pass Police Department is welcoming home one of its newest officers following his graduation from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Academy. On May 16, 2025, Officer Joe McGrew officially completed the academy portion of his training, marking a major step in his path to becoming a full-duty officer.
The ceremony took place in Salem, where McGrew joined other recruits from across the state in receiving certificates of completion after 16 weeks of rigorous instruction and physical conditioning. The training at the DPSST Academy is designed to prepare law enforcement officers for the demands of modern policing, with coursework covering state law, firearms, emergency vehicle operation, defensive tactics, ethics, crisis intervention, and community policing strategies.
Grants Pass Police Chief Warren Hensman and Captain DeKruger were present in the audience to support McGrew during the ceremony. Their attendance underscores the department’s ongoing investment in cultivating well-trained officers who are ready to meet the evolving safety and service needs of the community.
Now that he has completed the academy phase, Officer McGrew will return to Grants Pass to begin the Field Training Program, a critical phase of on-the-job instruction that pairs him with experienced officers who will guide him through real-world scenarios and community interaction. This intensive process allows recruits to apply the skills learned in the classroom to practical situations on the streets of Grants Pass under close supervision.
The Field Training Program, typically lasting several months, serves as the final evaluation period before an officer is cleared for solo patrol. During this time, officers are assessed on decision-making, report writing, situational awareness, community engagement, and adherence to department policy. Successful completion of this phase is required before full certification and assignment to independent duty.
Officer McGrew’s progress through the DPSST Academy and into the Field Training Program reflects the broader goals of the Grants Pass Police Department to maintain high standards of training, professionalism, and public trust. As the city continues to grow and public safety challenges evolve, the addition of well-prepared officers like McGrew plays a vital role in sustaining effective law enforcement services for the community.
The department extended its congratulations to McGrew for his dedication and accomplishments so far, acknowledging the effort required to reach this milestone. His graduation is not only a personal achievement but also a reminder of the continued commitment required by officers who serve in Oregon’s public safety system.
As Officer McGrew transitions into the next stage of training, community members can expect to see him increasingly present in daily operations while he continues to develop and refine his skills. The Grants Pass Police Department encourages residents to welcome him as he begins his service to the city.
