As the summer approaches, the City of Grants Pass is preparing for the start of the 2025 fire season. Fire officials have announced that fire season will officially begin on Sunday, June 1 at 12:01 a.m., with the initial fire danger level set to “Low” (green). This designation signals the beginning of a period marked by heightened awareness, specific activity restrictions, and increased fire prevention efforts throughout the city.
Under the authority of City Municipal Code 9.15, a series of regulated fire restrictions will also go into effect with the start of the season. These regulations are designed to minimize the risk of accidental fires and to protect both public and private lands as the dry summer months progress.
Among the key restrictions taking effect: smoking is strictly prohibited in areas where flammable vegetation is present. Open burning—including campfires, cooking fires, and warming fires—is also banned, except in specific areas that have been designated by the Fire Marshal. However, the use of natural gas, propane, and charcoal barbecues, as well as smokers and ornamental gas or propane fires, will still be allowed.
For those working with tools that can potentially start fires, such as power saws, the city has provided guidelines to ensure safe operation. Power saw use will be permitted throughout the day, but only if each operator has a shovel and a fire extinguisher with at least an 8-ounce capacity on hand. A mandatory fire watch of at least one hour is required following saw use.
Additionally, metal cutting, grinding, and welding operations in areas of dry vegetation will be allowed during this low fire danger period, as long as appropriate safety measures are in place. Mowing of dry grass—a common activity that can spark fires in higher danger conditions—will also be permitted throughout the day during the low-risk period.
Motorized vehicles, including off-road and all-terrain types, are restricted to improved roads clear of flammable vegetation, unless they are being used for agricultural purposes. Any other internal combustion engine that might produce sparks must be operated in cleared areas with immediate access to a charged garden hose or a fire extinguisher rated at 2.5 pounds or more.
City officials note that the City Fire Marshal retains the authority to issue written modifications or waivers of these requirements in certain circumstances, based on conditions or need.
While the initial danger level remains low, fire officials urge residents and visitors alike to remain vigilant. Even during low fire danger periods, careless actions can lead to devastating consequences. As the summer progresses and conditions become drier, restrictions may become more stringent and the fire danger level may increase accordingly.
