GRANTS PASS, OR — The City of Grants Pass has officially opened its Fall 2025 Tree Canopy Program, offering residents an affordable opportunity to enhance the city’s urban forest while beautifying their neighborhoods. For a $100 fee, city staff will professionally plant a tree in approved public spaces adjacent to private properties, helping increase shade, curb appeal, and long-term environmental sustainability.
The program, now accepting applications for the fall and winter planting season, is part of the city’s ongoing effort to expand its tree canopy and promote a healthier ecosystem. Participants must submit their applications no later than November 1, 2025. Due to limited inventory, trees will be distributed and planted on a first-come, first-served basis upon approval.
Eligible planting locations include planting strips—the area between the sidewalk and the curb—or within the Public Right-of-Way, such as the side yard of a corner property that fronts a public street. The city provides a diagram with the application to help residents determine suitable planting locations on or adjacent to their property.
The $100 fee covers the cost of the tree, planting labor, and basic care instructions provided by trained city staff. Trees are carefully selected based on species suitability, spacing, and site conditions to ensure long-term success and minimal maintenance.
“This program is a fantastic way for residents to contribute to the long-term health of our urban environment,” said a city spokesperson. “Street trees offer more than just beauty—they reduce urban heat, improve air quality, slow stormwater runoff, and increase property values.”
The Tree Canopy Program supports Grants Pass’s broader goals for climate resilience and sustainable urban planning. As tree coverage decreases in cities nationwide due to development and disease, programs like this one serve as a crucial response to the growing need for green infrastructure.
Applications are available for download via the City of Grants Pass website. Residents are encouraged to apply early, as trees are limited and demand is expected to be high. Once applications are reviewed and approved, city staff will coordinate with property owners to determine the best placement and species selection before planting begins later this year.
For questions about eligibility or application details, residents can email the city directly at tree@grantspassoregon.gov.
The Fall 2025 Tree Canopy Program represents an investment not just in today’s urban landscape, but in the shade, beauty, and environmental health of Grants Pass for generations to come. Interested residents are urged to take advantage of the opportunity to bring lasting greenery to their streets—one tree at a time.
