Josephine County residents interested in serving their community now have an opportunity to step into one of the most challenging and rewarding roles available: becoming a reserve firefighter with Rural Metro Fire. The agency has announced it is actively recruiting men and women to join its team through a part-time, call-back program designed to build the region’s emergency response capabilities.
The reserve firefighter program is more than a volunteer opportunity. It is a structured, state-accredited training program covering the full spectrum of firefighting and rescue skills. Participants will learn structural and wildland fire suppression, technical rescue techniques, and essential medical response. Rural Metro Fire emphasizes that this role is not ceremonial—it requires dedication, training, and a willingness to step into demanding situations.
Those accepted into the program will commit to a minimum of 36 hours of active participation per quarter. While schedules vary depending on call volume and availability, the position is considered a “compensated volunteer” role, beginning at Oregon’s minimum wage. The program is structured to give participants real-world experience in firefighting while maintaining flexibility for those balancing work or school commitments.
Applicants must meet several baseline requirements. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, hold a high school diploma or GED, and provide proof of a valid Oregon driver’s license. Residency within Rural Metro Fire’s response area—or within 30 minutes of its administrative office in Grants Pass—is also required. A physical abilities test, interview, background check, and drug screening must be successfully completed before a final offer is extended.
The recruitment timeline is already underway. Interested individuals must submit applications by September 26, 2025, at 5 p.m. Testing is scheduled to begin in October, with the academy officially launching in January 2026. Training and preparation will lead directly into active duty, where recruits will gain firsthand experience responding to emergencies across the county.
To apply, prospective recruits are asked to submit a letter of interest outlining their motivation for joining the program, along with their contact information. Letters should be sent by email to firejobs@ruralmetrofd.com. Additional information can also be obtained by calling Rural Metro Fire’s office at (541) 474-1218.
For Josephine County residents seeking a meaningful way to serve their neighbors while gaining valuable skills, this program offers a path into one of the most vital public service roles in the community.
