Residents holding burn permits issued before November 2 will now have a short extension to complete their seasonal yard-debris burning. The City of Grants Pass announced that all previously issued permits may be used through Sunday, November 9, giving property owners a limited window to finish clearing leaves and other natural debris. No additional permits will be issued during this period, and the extension applies only to those already approved before the cutoff date.
The adjustment comes after an unusual delay in the fall burn season. During the city’s originally scheduled open burn window, the Department of Environmental Quality did not approve any burn days, preventing local residents from using their permits as intended. Compounding the issue were communication problems tied to the DEQ’s burn information line, which was not updated consistently through the week. With inaccurate or missing data, residents were left unsure about whether burning was allowed under state air-quality standards.
To maintain compliance with Oregon’s air-quality rules, burning within the local airshed is only permitted when the DEQ ventilation index reaches 400 or higher. This index measures the ability of the atmosphere to disperse smoke and other particulates. When the index falls below the required threshold, smoke can accumulate, reducing air quality across neighborhoods and putting vulnerable residents at risk. For this reason, the city emphasizes that checking the ventilation index remains each permit holder’s responsibility.
Current ventilation readings are updated daily after 7 a.m. Residents can confirm conditions by calling the Burn Line at 541-476-9663, selecting option 3, or by visiting Josephine County’s online wood-burn advisory page. The city urges permit holders to verify conditions each day before lighting a pile, even during the extended window.
Open burning remains a tool used by many households to manage rural and suburban yard debris, especially during the fall leaf drop. However, it must be balanced against air-quality protections, public health concerns, and safe burning practices. The city’s Fire Prevention Department encourages residents to take extra care during the extended period, remain aware of changing weather conditions, and follow all safety guidelines listed on their permits.
Those with questions about burning rules or permit requirements may contact the Grants Pass Fire Prevention Department at 541-450-6200.
