Residents and businesses in downtown Grants Pass should prepare for temporary construction activity later this week as crews begin a planned water service installation project along SW 6th Street between H and I streets.
The work is scheduled to take place Thursday and Friday, February 26 and 27, with construction occurring just south of the alleyway located between the two streets. City utility crews will be installing new water service connections intended to support infrastructure reliability and continued development in the area.
According to project information released by the city, excavation work will begin Thursday morning. Crews will operate on both sides of SW 6th Street, primarily within the parking areas rather than active travel lanes. To minimize disruption to motorists, workers plan to bore underground between the two parking lanes instead of trenching across the roadway, allowing traffic to continue moving through the corridor during most of the construction period.
Although through traffic is expected to remain open, parking along SW 6th Street south of the alley between H and I streets will be temporarily restricted. Barricades and traffic cones will be placed along the construction zone beginning Wednesday evening to ensure the work area remains clear of parked vehicles before crews arrive. Drivers are encouraged to relocate vehicles in advance to avoid delays or potential towing during the project window.
City officials note that while construction impacts are expected to be localized, residents and nearby businesses may experience brief noise and activity associated with excavation equipment and utility work. Pedestrians traveling through the area should use caution and follow posted signage directing safe access around the work zone.
The installation work itself is anticipated to be completed on Thursday, weather permitting. Following the utility installation, asphalt patching and surface restoration are scheduled for early Friday morning to return parking areas and roadway surfaces to normal conditions as quickly as possible.
Infrastructure improvements such as water service installations are part of ongoing efforts to maintain and modernize Grants Pass’ public utility systems. Projects of this nature help ensure reliable water delivery while accommodating future service needs in growing commercial and residential areas.
Motorists, downtown visitors, and local residents are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra time when traveling near SW 6th Street, and remain attentive to construction crews working in the area. Normal parking and access are expected to resume once paving work is completed Friday.
