We never set out to become another traditional newspaper, and we have no desire to imitate one. Instead, we built something we believe reflects the changing way people consume information today. Our goal has always been simple: deliver factual, balanced journalism that respects our readers’ time while strengthening the communities we serve.
Many people ask what the Grants Pass Tribune really is because, at first glance, it doesn’t resemble the newspaper they grew up with. That observation is fair. We intentionally designed it to be different.
We believe community journalism should be approachable, informative and efficient. News should not feel like an obligation. It should be something you can comfortably enjoy with your morning coffee before beginning your day. Our objective is that a reader can browse the day’s headlines and complete the front page in well under an hour, walking away with a clear understanding of what matters most locally, regionally and nationally. We value depth where it belongs, but we also recognize that today’s readers deserve journalism that is concise without sacrificing accuracy or context.
Our philosophy has never been to overwhelm readers with constant negativity or sensationalism. There will always be dramatic stories competing for attention, and there will always be headlines designed to provoke emotion rather than inform. That has never been the direction we have chosen.
Public safety remains an important part of every community, and when events genuinely affect our readers, we report them responsibly. At the same time, we do not believe every routine police call or isolated incident deserves prominent placement simply because it generates clicks. We prefer to focus on the broader issues that shape Southern Oregon and the lives of the people who call it home. Local government, education, public safety, business, economic development, health, weather, community events, veterans, nonprofits, transportation and meaningful statewide and national developments all deserve thoughtful coverage because they directly influence our daily lives.
The Grants Pass Tribune was created to be available to everyone. That means no subscription barriers, no paywalls preventing access to important information and no unnecessary obstacles between our journalism and the people it serves. Every reader deserves access to reliable local news regardless of financial circumstances. If you choose to subscribe to our weekly email edition, there is no cost. We do not require excessive personal information simply to stay informed, nor do we believe your information should become a product to be bought and sold. Your trust is considerably more valuable than your data.
Our business model is intentionally straightforward. The newspaper remains free because it is supported by the businesses, organizations and community partners who advertise with us. Their investment allows us to continue producing independent local journalism while providing readers with unrestricted access to the information they need. When you support those advertisers, you are also supporting the continued growth of community journalism throughout Southern Oregon.
As our publication continues to grow, so will the opportunities we offer our readers. New features, expanded community resources, special publications and digital savings guides are already being developed, with additional ideas continually taking shape. Innovation has always been part of our identity, and we intend to continue evolving alongside the communities we serve while remaining committed to the principles that brought us here in the first place.
We understand that our approach may not resemble newspapers in major metropolitan markets, nor is it intended to. The needs of a community newspaper are fundamentally different from those of large national media organizations. Our responsibility is not to compete with them. Our responsibility is to serve our neighbors, our businesses, our local governments, our nonprofit organizations and the families who simply want an honest, dependable source of information each day.
We believe this represents the future of community journalism. Readers increasingly value credibility over noise, accessibility over barriers and substance over sensationalism. We are committed to remaining factual, visually engaging and focused on the stories that genuinely matter. Whether others eventually adopt a similar model is yet to be seen, but we are confident in the direction we have chosen.
