A routine can of hair mousse has become the subject of a nationwide consumer safety recall after its manufacturer discovered that certain pressurized containers could leak and potentially explode, prompting a warning for salons, hairstylists and households across the country to check their shelves.
Henkel Corporation has voluntarily recalled 25 lots of Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS Grip Extra Strong Mousse in the 6.76-fluid-ounce, or 200-milliliter, aluminum container. The recall was announced Aug. 11 and is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after reports revealed a packaging defect capable of allowing the product to escape while the can remains under pressure.
The problem is not with the mousse itself, its ingredients or its intended use. Instead, the concern centers on the aluminum packaging that contains the pressurized styling product. A failure in the container can allow the contents to leak while pressure remains inside, creating conditions in which the can could rupture or explode.
Henkel became aware of the problem following one complaint from a consumer and two reports from salons. The consumer reported bruising to the hand in connection with an incident involving the product. No additional injuries had been identified when the company announced the recall.
The affected mousse reached the market through 21 distributors operating in Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Washington. Products were also sold at the retail level to professional hairstylists and consumers, placing the recalled cans in an assortment of settings ranging from commercial salons to bathroom cabinets and personal styling kits.
Although Oregon is not among the 12 states identified in the company’s distribution list, the recall applies to affected products sold in the United States. Consumers outside the listed distribution states who have the product can determine whether their can is included by examining the batch code printed on the back of the container.
The recall encompasses 25 specific batch codes: 2901X4577N, 2901X4578N, 290265P91O, 290665Q30O, 290855N31O, 290866R38P, 290994281N, 291046L06P, 291174W17N, 291435H76O, 291435H77O, 291455N33O, 291515A59O, 291515A99O, 291515B01O, 291555N33O, 291615B01O, 291616B68P, 291716B69P, 291825E960, 291925E96O, 292015B73O, 2928Y538BO, 2928Y539BO and 293066U32P.
Consumers who find one of those codes on a Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS Grip 200-milliliter can are being encouraged to return the product to the place where it was purchased for a full refund. Because the defect involves a pressurized container, a recalled can should not be punctured, crushed, heated or intentionally manipulated in an attempt to determine whether it is leaking.
The recall is narrowly limited to the identified batches of OSiS Grip Extra Strong Mousse. Henkel has said that no other company products are involved, and cans of the same Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS Grip product carrying batch codes outside the recall are considered safe to use.
That distinction leaves consumers with a relatively simple task: check the product name, confirm the container size and compare the batch code on the back of the can with the recalled lots. For professional salons, where styling products may be purchased in larger quantities and remain in inventory for extended periods, checking existing stock is particularly important.
Henkel, which owns a broad portfolio of consumer and industrial brands in North America, manufactures products ranging from Schwarzkopf hair care and Dial soaps to Persil and Purex laundry detergents and Loctite adhesives. The company reported approximately $6.1 billion in North American sales during 2025 and employs more than 7,000 people in the United States and Canada.
