An armed robbery investigation that began Sunday night at a Walgreens escalated into a multi-agency pursuit Tuesday afternoon, carrying officers from the Grants Pass area into Jackson County before spike strips disabled the fleeing vehicle along Interstate 5 and its occupants were taken into custody.
The investigation began at approximately 8:45 p.m. Aug. 30, when officers responded to the Walgreens on West Main Street following a report of an armed robbery. Store employees told investigators that a man and woman had attempted to leave the business with a shopping cart containing unpaid merchandise.
According to the police account, employees confronted the pair before they could leave. During that confrontation, the woman allegedly produced a handgun, pointed it at an employee and threatened to shoot. The reported introduction of a firearm transformed what had begun as an alleged merchandise theft into an investigation involving a substantially more serious threat of violence.
The man and woman subsequently left the area in a white midsize sport utility vehicle equipped with a black roof rack. Responding officers searched the surrounding area but did not immediately locate either the vehicle or its occupants.
Investigators then examined the store’s security recordings. Police reported that the surveillance footage corroborated the employees’ descriptions of the encounter and provided investigators with video and still images depicting the individuals and vehicle believed to have been involved.
That evidence eventually enabled officers to identify the suspect vehicle, creating the connection that would lead authorities back to it two days after the original incident.
At approximately 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, an officer located the vehicle near Sage Road and Highway 238. Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver allegedly accelerated away at high speed rather than yielding.
Because officers were pursuing a vehicle connected to an investigation in which a firearm had reportedly been pointed at a store employee, police initiated a vehicle pursuit. The SUV traveled through several areas before reaching Interstate 5 and continuing northbound.
The pursuit expanded into a coordinated law enforcement response as the vehicle moved north. Oregon State Police and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office assisted while officers continued following the SUV along the interstate.
Authorities attempted multiple times to deploy spike strips, devices designed to puncture vehicle tires and progressively diminish a fleeing driver’s ability to continue traveling at speed. Earlier deployment attempts were unsuccessful, according to police.
Officers ultimately succeeded in deploying spike strips near Interstate 5 milepost 54. After encountering the strips, the SUV came to a stop and its occupants were taken into custody.
The pursuit significantly slowed traffic along Interstate 5 while law enforcement personnel worked to apprehend the occupants and secure the roadway. Traffic subsequently resumed after the incident was brought under control.
Police had not publicly identified the people taken into custody as of Tuesday afternoon. Authorities also had not announced specific criminal charges associated with either the original Walgreens incident or the subsequent pursuit.
The investigation therefore remains active as officers continue assembling evidence from the reported Aug. 30 robbery, surveillance recordings, witness accounts and Tuesday’s pursuit. Additional information, including the identities of those arrested and the allegations they may ultimately face, is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
