The second half of July brings one of the busiest community calendars of the summer to Josephine County, with activities scheduled every day from Wednesday, July 22, through Sunday, July 26. From downtown Grants Pass to the surrounding valleys, residents and visitors will find a full slate of public events that range from classic automobiles and local agriculture to art, recreation, live entertainment and family activities.
The largest draw of the weekend will be Cruise the Rogue, which begins Thursday and continues through Sunday, bringing hundreds of vehicles and thousands of spectators into downtown Grants Pass. Streets normally occupied by everyday traffic will instead become an outdoor showcase of automotive history, with everything from meticulously restored classics and American muscle cars to customs, imports, motorcycles, trucks and modern performance vehicles filling downtown display areas.
Throughout the four-day event, participants will arrive from across Oregon, Northern California and neighboring states, making Grants Pass a destination for automotive enthusiasts. Public vehicle displays, organized cruises, entertainment, vendors and food will keep activity centered in the downtown core for much of the weekend, while nationally recognized figures from the automotive world are also expected to make appearances during scheduled events.
While classic automobiles may dominate downtown, they are only one part of a community calendar that stretches across Josephine County.
Wednesday opens with Bingo Night at the Josephine County Fairgrounds, a familiar weekly gathering that continues to attract regular players and community supporters. The Grants Pass Small Business Task Force will also meet Wednesday evening at City Hall, where members will continue discussions involving business development and economic issues affecting the community.
Beginning Friday, attention also turns toward the Southern Oregon Lavender Trail Festival, as lavender farms throughout the Rogue and Applegate valleys open their gates for one of the most colorful weekends of the growing season. Visitors will have an opportunity to walk through fields in bloom, learn about lavender cultivation and harvesting, browse locally produced goods and handcrafted products, and enjoy demonstrations highlighting one of Southern Oregon’s expanding specialty crops.
Saturday morning brings another longtime community favorite as the Grants Pass Growers Market returns to downtown from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Farmers, ranchers, bakers and local producers will offer fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, meats, baked goods, honey, handcrafted products and specialty foods grown or produced throughout the region. For many residents, the Saturday market remains a weekly tradition that reflects the agricultural character of Josephine County while providing direct access to locally produced food.
The Grants Pass Museum of Art continues its current StitchPunk exhibition throughout the week, giving residents and visitors another reason to spend time downtown while exploring contemporary textile artwork. Families looking for activities away from the summer heat will also find YMCA youth programs, community recreation opportunities and DIY Craft Café workshops continuing throughout the week.
Community organizations remain active as well, with the Jelly July fundraiser continuing to collect support for the Josephine County Food Bank. The annual campaign provides additional assistance during the summer months, when food donations often decline despite continued community need.
By Sunday afternoon, Cruise the Rogue and the Southern Oregon Lavender Trail Festival will both come to a close, concluding a weekend expected to draw one of the largest concentrations of visitors to Josephine County this summer. Vehicle owners will begin heading home, vendor booths will be packed away, and downtown streets will gradually return to their normal pace after four days of continuous activity.
For residents, however, the weekend offers far more than a single attraction.
