Late Sunday night, a high-speed pursuit that began along Rogue River Highway ended in a violent wrong-way collision on Interstate 5 after a Grants Pass man allegedly drove into oncoming traffic while intoxicated, according to law enforcement officials in Jackson County.
Authorities identified the driver as Ivan Grover Barber Jr., 43, of Grants Pass. Investigators say Barber suffered serious injuries after the pickup truck he was driving collided head-on with a southbound SUV on Interstate 5 near Rogue River. He was transported to a local hospital following the crash and remains hospitalized while facing multiple criminal charges connected to the incident.
The sequence of events began shortly before 10:40 p.m. Sunday when a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a speeding Toyota pickup traveling in the 6400 block of Rogue River Highway. According to investigators, the vehicle accelerated away from deputies and continued eastbound toward the city of Rogue River at a high rate of speed.
Due to public safety concerns, deputies discontinued the pursuit before the vehicle reached the city limits. Law enforcement officials stated that Rogue River Police later deployed spike strips in an attempt to stop the fleeing truck. The spikes successfully disabled the vehicle, but investigators say the driver continued operating the damaged pickup and entered Interstate 5 traveling northbound in the southbound lanes.
Moments later, the pickup collided head-on with an SUV traveling legally on the interstate. The impact destroyed both vehicles and temporarily shut down portions of the freeway as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
The driver of the SUV suffered what authorities described as minor injuries. Emergency personnel from Jackson County Fire District 1 and American Medical Response responded to the crash site and worked to extricate Barber from the wreckage before transporting him for medical treatment.
Investigators allege alcohol impairment played a major role in the crash. Barber has been charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants, third-degree assault, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, felony attempt to elude police, and second-degree criminal mischief.
The Oregon State Police has taken over the crash reconstruction and investigation into the interstate collision. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office officials said the case remains active and additional information may be released as the investigation progresses.
Wrong-way crashes continue to rank among the most dangerous types of highway collisions in the United States because of the extreme closing speeds involved when vehicles strike head-on. Transportation officials across Oregon have repeatedly warned drivers about the dangers associated with impaired driving, excessive speed, and fleeing from law enforcement.
According to state and federal traffic safety agencies, alcohol-related crashes remain one of the leading causes of fatal and serious injury collisions on Oregon highways each year. Interstate 5, which serves as the primary north-south transportation corridor through Southern Oregon, has seen multiple serious crashes in recent years tied to intoxicated or reckless driving behavior.
Sunday night’s crash near Rogue River drew a large emergency response and forced traffic disruptions along the interstate while investigators documented the scene and removed the wreckage. Authorities have not released the identities of the SUV occupants involved in the collision.
Officials are continuing to ask anyone who may have witnessed the pursuit or the wrong-way driving incident prior to the crash to contact investigators as the case moves forward.
