A multi-agency investigation is underway in rural Central Point following the death of a 2-year-old child who was reported missing early Wednesday morning and found deceased approximately 71 minutes after law enforcement was called to the Blackwell Road area.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division detectives are leading the investigation, with assistance from the Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit, a regional team that brings together investigators from several Southern Oregon law enforcement agencies for major death and assault cases.
Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon received the missing-child report at approximately 4:30 a.m. from the 9900 block of Blackwell Road in rural Central Point. Jackson County sheriff’s deputies and Oregon State Police troopers responded to the area and immediately began searching for the child.
At 5:41 a.m., authorities located the 2-year-old deceased. The sheriff’s office has not released the child’s identity or provided additional details about where the child was found. Investigators also have not disclosed what occurred before the missing-child report was made or how long the child may have been missing before law enforcement was contacted.
The discovery shifted the response from a missing-child search to a death investigation, bringing Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division detectives into the case and prompting assistance from MADIU. MADIU includes detectives and representatives from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, Oregon State Police, Medford Police Department, Central Point Police Department, Ashland Police Department and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office. The regional structure allows personnel from multiple agencies to work together on investigations requiring additional resources, specialized experience and coordination between law enforcement and prosecutors.
Although Central Point Police Department detectives are participating through MADIU, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation. The incident occurred in rural Central Point, where sheriff’s deputies handled the initial response alongside Oregon State Police troopers before the broader investigative team was assembled.
The participation of MADIU does not establish that investigators have determined a crime occurred.
