The Oregon Department of Forestry’s Complex Incident Management Team 3 (CIMT 3) officially took command of the Board Shanty Fire early Friday morning, as firefighters continue battling the 300-acre blaze burning just south of Grants Pass.
Crews launched a strong overnight attack after the fire rapidly expanded Thursday evening around 5:00 p.m. Thanks to cooler temperatures overnight, firefighters were able to establish approximately 5,000 feet of handline along Board Shanty Road on the northeastern edge of the fire, slowing its forward progress at the head. However, fire behavior remains very active, with frequent spot fires jumping containment lines and dangerous overhead hazards from standing dead timber threatening firefighter safety.
Today, ground crews are continuing aggressive direct firefighting tactics in an effort to connect the fire’s head to its heel. Aerial support is playing a critical role in suppression efforts and is expected to remain a vital resource throughout the day.
The initial response included units from ODF’s Southwest Oregon District, along with engine support from Grants Pass Fire, Rural Metro Fire, and various Rogue Valley fire agencies. Resources were also reassigned from the Grizzly Complex, which CIMT 3 has been managing since July 8. The Grizzly Complex, which included 22 separate fires, is now reported to be 79% contained, with more than half of the individual fires nearing full containment.
Meanwhile, fire danger remains high throughout Southern Oregon. Hot weather, low humidity, and gusty winds are contributing to elevated wildfire risks across the region. ODF officials are urging the public to observe all fire safety regulations and remain vigilant during outdoor recreation activities this weekend.
Evacuation notices have been issued due to the Board Shanty Fire. The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office has placed Zones JCU-436 and JCU-437 under a Level 2 “Be Set” evacuation notice, while Zone JCU-448 remains at Level 1 “Be Ready.” In neighboring Jackson County, Zone JAC-068 is also under a Level 1 “Be Ready” advisory. Officials are also reminding the public that unauthorized drone activity near wildfires is both illegal and poses a serious threat to aerial operations. If a drone is spotted in the area, all aircraft must be grounded, potentially jeopardizing containment efforts. Any illegal drone use will be reported to law enforcement.
