Oregon’s professional sports landscape has expanded with the opening of a $150 million performance complex in Hillsboro built specifically around the training, medical, recovery and day-to-day needs of professional women athletes. The Kaiser Permanente Performance Center is now the shared training home of the WNBA’s Portland Fire and the National Women’s Soccer League’s Portland Thorns, placing two of the state’s major professional franchises at a single campus west of Portland.
The facility was formally celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday, Aug. 22, following its unveiling as part of a week of women’s sporting events in the Portland metropolitan area. Developed by RAJ Sports, the organization that owns and operates both teams, the Hillsboro campus has been identified as the nation’s first purpose-built performance center shared by two professional women’s teams competing in different sports.
The approximately 100,000-square-foot complex represents a major expansion of the permanent infrastructure supporting professional women’s sports in Oregon. The project transformed a former corporate property on approximately 12 acres into a combined basketball and soccer training campus capable of supporting two teams with substantially different athletic and conditioning requirements.
For the Portland Fire, the complex provides the WNBA franchise with a permanent training headquarters during its inaugural 2026 season. The Fire had used facilities at Portland State University during training camp and the early portion of the season while work in Hillsboro was completed. The Portland Thorns began using the new outdoor training fields earlier this summer as construction continued on other portions of the campus.
Basketball operations are centered around a 17,000-square-foot practice gym containing two full-size courts. Soccer operations include two full-size outdoor pitches and an additional outdoor training area. The campus also contains approximately 5,000 square feet dedicated to strength and performance training, with specialized equipment, an outdoor turf training zone and space for yoga and Pilates.
Medical care, rehabilitation and athletic recovery were incorporated directly into the facility’s design. Hydrotherapy areas, an underwater treadmill, sports medicine facilities and recovery spaces allow treatment and physical conditioning to take place alongside regular team operations. Kaiser Permanente serves as the official physician and health care provider for both organizations, providing sports medicine, injury prevention, rehabilitation, primary care, mental health services and longer-term athlete care.
The center also brings sports science and strength and conditioning programs into the same operating environment. Rather than separating medical treatment, physical training and recovery among different locations, the Hillsboro facility was designed to allow those functions to operate within one campus for athletes from both sports.
Nutrition has a similar place within the complex. A full-service dining area is supported by a full-time chef and nutritionist, while refueling stations are positioned throughout the facility. Team meeting rooms and content-production spaces are also incorporated into the building, allowing practices, meetings, medical treatment, meals and other daily team functions to occur at the same location.
Several portions of the facility were developed specifically around needs that historically have not always been incorporated into professional sports training centers. The Fire and Thorns have their own locker and team spaces, while the complex includes dedicated areas for players’ families, two mothers’ rooms and nursery accommodations. Private player entrances and secured parking are also part of the campus.
The project was designed by Populous, an international architecture firm specializing in sports and entertainment facilities, while Portland-based Hoffman Construction served as general contractor. Instead of constructing the entire development on previously undeveloped land, the project incorporated an existing former Nike office complex and converted the property for professional athletic use.
RAJ Sports is also expanding its business operations in Hillsboro. The organization has secured additional corporate headquarters space near the performance center, further establishing the Washington County city as an administrative as well as athletic base for the Fire and Thorns.
For Hillsboro, the arrival of both organizations places the city directly within Oregon’s professional sports network. Portland remains the location where the teams play their home games, but Hillsboro now houses much of the preparation, conditioning, rehabilitation and organizational work occurring between those competitions.
The complex also includes plans for uses extending beyond professional team operations. Community-oriented programming associated with the project has included clinics, classes, youth activities and public health initiatives, creating opportunities for portions of the campus and its programming to connect professional athletics with the surrounding community.
The opening arrives during a period of substantial investment in women’s professional sports across Oregon. The Thorns have been part of the state’s professional sports landscape since the NWSL’s inaugural season in 2013, while the Portland Fire brought WNBA basketball back to Oregon in 2026 after an absence of more than two decades. The current Fire franchise adopted the name of Portland’s original WNBA team, which competed from 2000 through 2002.
RAJ Sports acquired the Thorns in 2024 and subsequently secured Portland’s WNBA expansion franchise. The organization’s ownership of teams in both leagues provided the foundation for developing one training campus capable of accommodating professional soccer and basketball operations while maintaining dedicated areas for each franchise.
The performance center’s opening was incorporated into RAJ Sports’ Epicenter Week, a series of events centered on women’s athletics that included professional games, community programming and the Women’s Global Sports Summit at Nike’s campus in Beaverton. A newly announced partnership between Nike and RAJ Sports involving both the Fire and Thorns accompanied the week’s activities.
Oregonians traveling north from Southern Oregon now have another destination connected to the state’s professional sports scene. Hillsboro sits west of Portland in Washington County and can be incorporated into a Portland-area trip that includes a Thorns or Fire game, although the performance center itself functions primarily as a working training headquarters rather than a conventional public sports attraction. Public access depends on scheduled team, community or special events.
The completion of the Kaiser Permanente Performance Center establishes a permanent training base for two professional franchises whose competitions remain centered in Portland while extending Oregon’s professional sports footprint farther into Washington County. From two basketball courts and two soccer pitches to medical treatment, strength training, nutrition, recovery and family accommodations, the Hillsboro campus brings the principal daily operations of the Portland Fire and Portland Thorns together in one location built specifically for professional women athletes.
