Snow returned to the upper reaches of Mt. Bachelor over the Labor Day weekend, adding another wintry layer to the Central Oregon Cascades only days after the mountain recorded its first snowfall of the 2026 season and marking one of the most visible signs yet of Oregon’s abrupt September weather change.
The latest snowfall followed the mountain’s first seasonal dusting on Sept. 2, when snow covered terrain from approximately mid-mountain toward the summit. Additional precipitation and colder mountain temperatures brought snow back during the weekend as a broad low-pressure system crossed Oregon, replacing stretches of summer heat with rain, thunderstorms, chilly mornings and temperatures cold enough for snow across the highest elevations.
The change was pronounced across Central Oregon, where communities that spent much of the summer contending with heat, dry vegetation, wildfire smoke and elevated fire danger suddenly awakened to temperatures in the 30s and 40s. Areas closer to the Cascade crest experienced some of the coldest conditions, while portions of Klamath and Lake counties were placed under a freeze warning as temperatures were expected to fall as low as 29 degrees around Chemult, Gilchrist, Crescent and other higher-elevation communities.
At Mt. Bachelor, where elevations rise considerably above the surrounding high desert, the colder air transformed precipitation into snow while communities farther east experienced rain and cool autumn conditions. National Weather Service forecasts placed temperatures near 33 degrees at the mountain Sunday night, followed by a daytime high near 51 degrees Monday.
The snow arrived unusually early in the seasonal transition but not after the conclusion of summer recreation. Mt. Bachelor remains in its summer operating season, with mountain biking, hiking and other warm-weather activities continuing into the fall. Summer operations are scheduled to extend into early October, placing September snowfall alongside a recreation calendar still largely oriented toward cycling and other non-winter activities.
Across Oregon, the same atmospheric system responsible for the colder Cascade conditions delivered a broader period of rain and thunderstorms. The upper-level low moved east of the Cascades by Monday, allowing lingering showers to diminish and skies to begin clearing across much of western and central Oregon.
The cooler weather provided a conspicuous change following a summer dominated by persistent dryness and substantial wildfire activity. Rainfall and lower temperatures increased moisture across portions of the state and temporarily moderated some of the conditions that had contributed to fire danger. The arrival of snow at higher elevations, however, does not signal the conclusion of Oregon’s wildfire season. Dry vegetation remains across extensive areas, and September can still produce periods of warm temperatures, low humidity and wind capable of increasing fire behavior.
That possibility is already evident in the forecast.
Rather than continuing steadily toward colder autumn weather, Oregon is expected to experience another substantial temperature reversal during the middle of the week. High pressure building into the region is forecast to bring drier conditions and rapidly rising temperatures Tuesday through Thursday.
Central Oregon communities are expected to move from morning temperatures in the 30s and 40s into the 70s Tuesday, followed by highs reaching the lower to middle 80s in some locations Wednesday and Thursday. Bend, Redmond, Prineville and Madras are among the communities expected to experience the warming trend after several days of rain and substantially cooler weather.
Western Oregon will warm as well. National Weather Service forecasters expect many interior valleys to reach the upper 70s to middle 80s Tuesday through Thursday, with Wednesday likely to produce the warmest temperatures of the period. Even coastal Oregon is expected to experience comparatively mild conditions as offshore airflow develops.
Conditions at Mt. Bachelor will follow the same general pattern, although temperatures will remain considerably cooler because of elevation. After Monday’s high near 51 degrees, the mountain is forecast to reach approximately 59 Tuesday and 67 Wednesday under sunny skies. Temperatures are expected to moderate later in the week, with another possibility of showers and high-elevation snow entering the forecast by the weekend.
Forecast confidence decreases considerably beginning Friday as another upper-level weather system approaches the Pacific Northwest. Depending upon its eventual track and strength, Oregon could experience another period of cooler and wetter weather or remain comparatively warm and dry. Mountain snow levels could again descend sufficiently for mixed rain and snow near the higher elevations of the Cascades.
The rapidly changing conditions are characteristic of the atmospheric variability that can accompany Oregon’s transition from late summer into early fall. September can produce substantial differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures, particularly east of the Cascades, while Pacific weather systems increasingly become capable of carrying colder air and widespread precipitation into the state.
For Southern Oregon, the pattern also carries practical consequences. Cooler mornings and recent precipitation have provided temporary relief from some summer conditions, but warmer and drier weather remains possible between passing systems. Residents traveling across the Cascades or into Central Oregon can encounter substantially different temperatures within relatively short distances, particularly at higher elevations where freezing conditions and snowfall can occur while valleys remain warm.
Mt. Bachelor now provides a particularly vivid example of that seasonal overlap. Snow has fallen twice during the opening week of September while summer recreation remains underway, Central Oregon temperatures are preparing to climb back into the 80s, and another potentially cooler Pacific system waits beyond the middle-week warming period.
Oregon has not completed its transition into autumn weather. Instead, the opening days of September have brought an accelerated exchange between seasons, with rain returning to valleys, freezing temperatures reaching portions of the high desert and the first layers of 2026 snow settling across the Cascade peaks weeks before summer activities have concluded.
