From downtown Grants Pass to Jacksonville, Medford and Ashland, the week of August 17 through August 23 brings live music, outdoor entertainment, farmers markets, theater, cultural gatherings and a few distinctly Southern Oregon experiences that make the final weeks of summer worth savoring.
Ashland gets an early start Monday, August 17, with Epic Ashland Summer Sounds bringing Diggin’ Dirt to Lithia Park from 6 to 9 p.m. The free evening combines live music with food trucks, a beer garden and activities for children, turning one of Southern Oregon’s best-known parks into a Monday night gathering place. Ashland’s summer calendar continues throughout the week with community recreation activities at Garfield Park, while the Ashland City Band returns to the Butler Bandshell in Lithia Park Thursday evening for another installment of a tradition that has long been part of summer in the Rogue Valley.
The weekend begins gathering momentum Friday, August 21, with music spread across several communities. Britt Music & Arts Festival brings Allen Stone and The Dip to the Britt Pavilion in Jacksonville for a 7 p.m. performance, adding another national touring act to the historic hillside venue’s summer season. Grants Pass will have its own Friday night soundtrack, with The Flavor scheduled to perform at the Wonder Bur in downtown Grants Pass, while The Hivve on Southeast G Street hosts an all-ages hip-hop show later in the evening. Medford joins the mix with live music at RoxyAnn Winery, offering another option for those looking to ease into the weekend outdoors.
Saturday, August 22, offers one of the broadest selections of the week. In Grants Pass, the Growers Market returns from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., filling the downtown market area with locally grown produce, specialty foods, plants, handmade products and the easygoing Saturday-morning atmosphere that has made the market a longtime community fixture. It is the kind of stop that can be as quick as picking up a bag of fresh produce or as leisurely as spending the morning wandering through vendors and catching up with familiar faces.
Car enthusiasts can point themselves toward Medford Saturday morning for Medford Cars & Coffee, beginning at 9 a.m. Southern Oregon’s outdoor setting also gets incorporated into the entertainment calendar through Concert at the Rocks, an unusual combination of Rogue River jet-boat travel and live music. The August 22 outing is scheduled to feature Evening Shades, giving passengers a chance to combine the river, scenery and music in an experience considerably different from a conventional concert hall.
Jacksonville keeps Saturday night moving when Greensky Bluegrass takes the stage at the Britt Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. The combination of live music and Britt’s open-air hillside setting has become inseparable from summertime in Jacksonville, and the August schedule continues to give concertgoers plenty of reasons to make the short drive into the historic community.
Farther south, Mt. Ashland’s summer outdoor movie series offers another way to spend Saturday evening. Moviegoers can trade the traditional theater for mountain air and a night beneath the stars, bringing blankets and chairs or settling in from their vehicles for a high-elevation summer movie experience.
Ashland will remain busy throughout the weekend. Free guided walks through Lithia Park are scheduled Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 11:30 a.m., while the Oregon Shakespeare Festival continues its performance season. Flynn Creek Circus is also scheduled at ScienceWorks through August 23 with The Cricket & the Wren, adding acrobatics and family entertainment to an already crowded Ashland arts calendar.
Those willing to stretch their weekend drive beyond the Rogue Valley will find additional celebrations across the region. The Douglas County Highland Games and Clan Gathering is scheduled August 22 and 23 near Roseburg, bringing Scottish athletics and cultural traditions together for a two-day event.
