Stop number sixteen on my month-long Say Cheese journey took me somewhere that perfectly captures the old-school charm of Grants Pass dining, Jimmy’s Classic Drive-In at 515 NE E Street. This visit came with a special guest who may have been even more excited than I was, my three-year-old princess, Sophie. Bringing a young taste tester along always adds a little extra fun to the experience, and in this case it also reminded me why places like Jimmy’s have remained local favorites for generations.
Jimmy’s Classic Drive-In has that unmistakable drive-in feel that many of us grew up with. It is casual, welcoming, and rooted in comfort food done right. Burgers, fries, milkshakes, and classic American favorites are the backbone of the menu, but this particular visit introduced something creative that immediately stood out in my Say Cheese month lineup.
Chef Rob Gamble decided to take a familiar fairground favorite and turn it into something entirely new. The entry for this stop was a jack cheese corn dog served with house-made chili. On paper it sounded interesting, but I will admit it was not exactly what I expected when I first heard about it. After the first bite, however, it quickly became clear that this was one of the most inventive dishes I have encountered during the entire month.
The corn dog itself had a beautiful golden crust that delivered the perfect crunch with each bite. The batter had a subtle sweetness that balanced nicely with the savory jack cheese inside. What really elevated the experience was the drizzle of honey across the top, which added another layer of sweetness that complemented the crisp exterior. It was the kind of flavor combination that surprises you at first but quickly makes perfect sense once everything comes together.
Then there was the chili.
Chef Gamble absolutely nailed it. The house-made chili was rich, hearty, and packed with flavor. It had a chunky texture that made it feel substantial rather than overly saucy, and the flavor profile struck a great balance between sweet and heat. There was just enough spice to wake up the palate without overwhelming the other elements of the dish. When paired with the corn dog, the chili brought a bold, savory contrast that tied the entire creation together.
This combination turned what could have been a simple novelty item into something genuinely memorable. The sweetness of the honey, the crunch of the batter, the creamy jack cheese, and the bold chili all played off each other in a way that made every bite interesting.
While I was busy appreciating the creativity of the corn dog and chili pairing, my little guest Sophie had her own culinary adventure happening across the table. She went with a classic choice from the menu, a basket of tater tots. As any parent knows, a toddler’s approval is sometimes the toughest review to earn, but these passed the test with flying colors. Crispy on the outside and soft inside, they disappeared quickly, which in kid-review terms usually means they were a big success.
What made this stop especially memorable was not just the food, but the moment. Sitting there sharing a meal with my daughter while trying something creative and unexpected reminded me why food experiences like this matter. They bring people together, spark conversation, and sometimes even create a little culinary surprise.
Jimmy’s Classic Drive-In delivered one of the most imaginative entries in Say Cheese month so far, proving that even the most familiar comfort foods can still surprise you when a creative chef decides to have a little fun in the kitchen. Stop sixteen definitely earned its place on the list.
