In just 30 days, sidewalks, storefronts and neighborhoods across Grants Pass will transform into one of the city’s largest classrooms. On Saturday, Aug. 8, young entrepreneurs from throughout the community will put weeks of preparation into action as they open their own lemonade businesses during the annual Lemonade Day celebration, an event that has become a summertime tradition focused on education, creativity and community involvement.
Lemonade Day will take place from noon until 3 p.m. on Aug. 8, with lemonade stands operating throughout Grants Pass rather than from a single venue. Families, residents and visitors are encouraged to spend the afternoon exploring the city, meeting young business owners and supporting locally operated stands that reflect each child’s individual ideas and entrepreneurial spirit. The event is free to attend and open to everyone.
Although every stand will be serving lemonade, no two businesses are expected to be exactly alike. Each participant develops a unique business plan, selects a stand location, creates a brand, designs advertising, establishes pricing and prepares products before opening for customers. Some children choose traditional lemonade recipes, while others add baked goods, specialty flavors or creative presentation ideas to help distinguish their businesses.
The program is coordinated annually by the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce and is offered at no cost to participating families through the support of local businesses, sponsors and community partners. Rather than simply teaching children how to sell a product, Lemonade Day introduces practical lessons in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, teamwork, customer service and personal responsibility that many participants carry with them long after the event has concluded.
Preparation begins well before opening day. Participants work through educational activities that guide them through each step of starting a business, from setting financial goals and calculating expenses to understanding profits and serving customers. Along the way, they learn the importance of planning ahead, solving problems, communicating effectively and making thoughtful financial decisions.
One of the program’s most recognizable lessons encourages participants to divide their earnings into three purposes: spending, saving and sharing. Children are taught to enjoy a portion of what they earn, set money aside for future goals and donate part of their proceeds to a nonprofit organization or charitable cause of their choosing. That philosophy reinforces the idea that successful businesses can also strengthen the communities they serve.
The event also provides an opportunity for local businesses to invest in the next generation. Many merchants throughout Grants Pass volunteer to host lemonade stands outside their storefronts, mentor participants or sponsor educational activities leading up to the event. Parents, grandparents, teachers and volunteers also play an important role by helping young entrepreneurs develop confidence while allowing them to make the key business decisions themselves.
As registration continues through the end of July, organizers are encouraging additional young entrepreneurs to participate. Before Lemonade Day arrives, educational workshops and resource opportunities help participants learn everything from selecting an ideal stand location to creating attractive displays, preparing products safely and providing excellent customer service. Awards are presented following the event for achievements such as creative stand design and outstanding products, with additional prize drawings available for participants.
For residents, Lemonade Day offers far more than an opportunity to purchase a cold drink during the summer. It provides a chance to encourage children who are taking their first steps into business ownership while strengthening connections between families, neighborhoods and local businesses. Every purchase represents encouragement for a young person learning the value of initiative, hard work and perseverance.
With one month remaining before the citywide celebration, anticipation is beginning to build. On Aug. 8, from noon until 3 p.m., lemonade stands will appear across Grants Pass, each representing more than a refreshing drink. Together they will showcase imagination, determination and the entrepreneurial spirit of a community investing in its future, one cup of lemonade at a time.
