Recently, there have been rumors circulating about candidate for County Commissioner, Chris Barnett pursuing legal action against the Grants Pass Tribune for alleged libel. I want to reassure you that there is no cause for concern. We stand by the integrity of our journalism and have evidence to support every story we publish. Our commitment to delivering accurate and truthful reporting remains steadfast, and we are confident in our ability to defend against any legal challenge.
The decision to pursue a lawsuit appears to be a politically motivated attempt to silence the press. In fact, Chris Barnett’s legal representation has notable connections to John West, another public figure in our community. While Mr. Barnett claims no business relationship with Mr. West, the connection raises questions about the nature of this legal maneuver.
It’s important to remember that when a candidate steps into the public arena, scrutiny and accountability are part of the process. Public officials and candidates are subject to open records, and the electorate has the right to know about any relevant history. Should Mr. Barnett proceed with this lawsuit, it may open the door to further examination of his past, including allegations of questionable real estate practices dating back to 2010. We have received numerous letters and confidential tips from community members that touch on these and other concerns, many of which we have chosen not to publish out of an abundance of caution.
Interestingly, Mr. Barnett recently stated at a local forum that he is not in politics for personal gain but rather to serve the community. However, he seeks $100,000 in damages, citing harm to his real estate business. This raises the question: if his focus is truly on public service, why pursue such a significant financial settlement? The lawsuit seems inconsistent with his professed priorities, suggesting it is an attempt to distract from the real issues at hand.
Our role as journalists is not to sensationalize or attack, but to inform. We do not take pleasure in exposing uncomfortable truths, but we refuse to be intimidated or censored. The public deserves transparency and an honest dialogue about the individuals who seek to govern. The stakes are high, and the citizens of Grants Pass have the right to know the full story.
