To the Josephine County Board of Commissioners,
Democracy, by definition, is a government by the people. A republic, which we also proudly claim to be, is rooted in the same idea: that power lies with the people, and those chosen to represent them serve the people—not above them, not against them, and certainly not instead of them.
Lately, it seems this fundamental truth has been forgotten.
Commissioners, your job is not to perform power but to practice service. Your authority comes from us, from the people of Josephine County—not from a podium, a press release, or a personal ideology. And yet, time and again, this board has shown open disdain for accountability.
Public meetings have become theater, where questions are dismissed and concerned citizens are treated as nuisances. Community members attempting to engage in the civic process are brushed aside or, worse, mocked. Experienced county staff have been pushed out, departments reshuffled or gutted, and policy changes made without process or input. Transparency has become optional. Legal review, when it exists at all, feels like an afterthought.
When these patterns are questioned, they are met with deflection. At a recent public meeting, one commissioner even declared that “the deep state is real, and it’s here in Josephine County.” Let that sink in.
Instead of acknowledging the growing list of concerns from residents, employees, and local leaders, this board has chosen to lean into conspiracy and cast shadows where there should be clarity. It’s hard not to laugh, except the damage being done is real.
Let’s be clear. Leadership is not meant to be an echo chamber. Public feedback, even when uncomfortable, is not your enemy. That is the public doing its job. Your job is to listen, answer, and act in the interest of all of us—not just the voices that flatter you or follow your narrative.
If you believe criticism makes someone part of a “deep state,” then perhaps you’ve misunderstood what it means to serve in a democracy. Or perhaps you’ve simply grown too comfortable in your position, unchecked by the very people you claim to represent.
But here’s the truth: Josephine County is watching. Your constituents are speaking. And we’re not going anywhere.
You don’t get to silence us with buzzwords. You don’t get to paint dissent as sabotage. And you certainly don’t get to rewrite the purpose of your office to suit your personal crusade.
Democracy isn’t a stage for ego. It’s a system that requires humility, openness, and service. If that sounds like a threat to you, then maybe the “deep state” isn’t the problem. Maybe it’s just the public doing exactly what the Constitution allows us to do: holding our leaders accountable.
Sincerely,
Rachael
A citizen of Josephine County. And yes, proudly one of the many voices you can’t mute.
