The stage is once again coming to life at the Grants Pass Performing Arts Center as preparations accelerate for a fall theatrical production that will showcase original work created in Oregon. As I reviewed plans for the upcoming season, it became clear that this production is designed to do more than entertain audiences. It also offers local performers, musicians, technicians, artists, volunteers and businesses an opportunity to become part of a community effort that celebrates homegrown creative talent.
This fall’s production will feature two original one-act musicals, Fairhaven and In Time, both written and developed in Oregon. Rather than relying on nationally recognized productions, the nonprofit theater company has chosen to highlight original works, giving local playwrights and performers another opportunity to bring new stories to the stage while strengthening Southern Oregon’s performing arts community.
Auditions are scheduled for Friday, July 31, from 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 1, from 2 to 5 p.m. Organizers are encouraging performers of varying experience levels to participate, with a broad range of characters available for casting. The productions include roles portraying angels, demons, inmates, a newspaper editor, a baker and numerous additional supporting characters, offering opportunities for performers with different acting styles, vocal ranges and stage experience.
Community theater productions often serve as an entry point for first-time performers while also attracting seasoned actors looking to remain active on the stage. Productions such as these frequently bring together people from a wide variety of professional backgrounds who share an interest in music, acting and storytelling, creating an environment where newcomers and experienced performers collaborate throughout months of rehearsals before opening night.
