The roar of jet boats on the Rogue River, the sight of families lining the parade route downtown, the familiar smell of fair food drifting through Riverside Park, and the thunder of military aircraft overhead can only mean one thing in Southern Oregon. Boatnik season has returned once again to Grants Pass.
With Memorial Day weekend now just weeks away, organizers are encouraging residents and visitors to begin preparing early for one of the region’s most recognized and longest-running community traditions. Pre-sale tickets for concerts, carnival wristbands, and ride access are now available, giving families an opportunity to save money before the crowds arrive and before some events begin reaching capacity.
For generations, Boatnik has marked the unofficial kickoff to summer in Josephine County. What began decades ago as a celebration centered around the Rogue River and Southern Oregon’s deep connection to jet boating has grown into a multi-day event that now draws thousands of people from across Oregon and beyond.
Despite the growth, the heart of Boatnik has remained the same. It is still a hometown tradition built around community, family, remembrance, and celebration of the river that helped shape Grants Pass into what it is today.
Each year, one of the most emotional and meaningful moments of the weekend comes during the Memorial Reef Ceremony on the Rogue River. The memorial float honors individuals connected to the boating community and residents who are no longer with us, serving as a reminder that Boatnik is about far more than entertainment alone. Along the water, spectators often pause quietly as boats move downriver carrying memorial wreaths in tribute to those remembered by family and friends. For many longtime residents, the ceremony remains one of the most important traditions of the entire weekend.
The Boatnik Parade also continues to be a major centerpiece of the celebration. Streets throughout downtown Grants Pass traditionally fill early with families carrying lawn chairs, children waving flags, and local organizations proudly representing the community. From classic cars and emergency vehicles to school groups, businesses, veterans organizations, and community floats, the parade reflects the spirit and personality of Southern Oregon itself.
Inside Riverside Park, the atmosphere transforms into a full community festival. Carnival rides, games, live music, food vendors, shopping booths, and nightly entertainment create an environment that brings together multiple generations at once. For many local families, attending Boatnik is not simply another event on the calendar. It is a tradition passed from parents to children and now grandchildren.
Organizers are reminding attendees that admission into the event grounds remains free, but carnival wristbands are required for rides, while concession tickets and concert tickets must also be purchased separately. Officials say pre-sale opportunities remain available for those wanting to secure access before prices increase closer to the event or before concerts sell out.
Community leaders and event organizers are encouraging residents to purchase early not only for convenience, but to help support the continuation of an event that has become deeply tied to the identity of Grants Pass itself.
As Southern Oregon moves closer toward summer, Boatnik once again stands ready to bring thousands together along the banks of the Rogue River for another year of memories, celebration, tradition, and community pride.
