In yesterday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Herman Baertschiger made a series of public comments that have raised concerns about his suitability for office. His remarks, critical of Josephine County and Oregon’s economic and regulatory environment, have been described by many as off-putting and unfit for an elected official.
During yesterday’s business session’s public comment Baertschiger questioned why any business would consider relocating to Oregon, negatively citing high income and corporate tax rates, stringent regulations, and additional payroll deductions. “I will be honest with you, and I’ve said it in the legislature: why would anybody bring their business to Oregon? We have the third highest income tax rate, the most progressive income tax rate, corporate rate, and capital gains rate. The regulations and restrictions in Oregon with the statewide land use for development are all very, very expensive compared to other states,” he stated.
He continued to highlight various state-imposed financial burdens, including the statewide transportation tax and family deduction on paychecks, which he argued dissuade businesses from moving to Oregon. Baertschiger lamented the decline of several industries that once thrived in the state, including timber and shipbuilding, and pointed to the current situation in Portland as evidence of the state’s economic struggles. “You go to Portland, there’s nothing, nothing but homeless, and wonder why people don’t want to bring a business to Oregon,” he remarked.
The reaction to Baertschiger’s comments has been swift and strong. Many residents of Josephine County are now questioning whether Commissioner Baertschiger should remain in his position. Observers expressed outrage over what they viewed as a negative and harmful portrayal of the state. “Honestly ridiculous that this man is an elected official,” said one community member. “His little Napoleonic complex is not suited. His mental capacity is also not suited if he’s so miserable here, he should just leave.”
Residents argue that such statements not only undermine efforts to attract and retain businesses in Oregon but also reflect poorly on the community and state as a whole. They believe that elected officials should focus on promoting and improving their regions rather than disparaging them.
As the community continues to react to Baertschiger’s remarks, it remains to be seen how this controversy will impact future discussions on economic development and the overall perception of Oregon as a place to live and do business. It is clear that Commissioner Baertschiger’s negativity is appalling to many who voted for and supported him. There are growing calls for him to either step down immediately or issue a public apology and seek anger management counseling. The community demands accountability and a leader who can act logically, without being clouded by anger and dissatisfaction.
