Drivers traveling through downtown Grants Pass next week should prepare for temporary road closures and traffic delays as the City of Grants Pass moves forward with a street improvement project along a heavily traveled section of 5th Street.
Beginning Wednesday, May 27, and continuing through Friday, May 29, crews will close 5th Street between H Street and Bridge Street each day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. while grinding and repaving operations take place. The project is part of ongoing roadway maintenance efforts aimed at improving driving conditions and preserving one of the city’s key downtown traffic corridors.
City officials are encouraging motorists to avoid the area during construction hours and use alternate routes whenever possible. Traffic control measures, including detours and flaggers, will be in place throughout the duration of the project to help direct vehicles safely around the work zone.
The closure is expected to affect both local traffic and commuters traveling through the downtown corridor during daytime hours. Drivers attempting to access nearby businesses, offices, or connecting streets in the area may experience congestion and delays, particularly during morning and afternoon travel periods.
Officials are also asking residents and business patrons to avoid on-street parking within the construction zone during work hours to allow crews full access to the roadway and heavy equipment. Temporary parking impacts are expected throughout the three-day paving operation.
Emergency vehicle access through the closure zone will not be permitted while active construction is underway, making route planning especially important for residents, delivery drivers, and service providers operating in the downtown area during the project.
Grinding and repaving work is commonly performed to remove deteriorating pavement surfaces before applying fresh asphalt, helping extend the lifespan of city streets while improving overall driving safety and ride quality. Projects like this are often scheduled during late spring and summer months when weather conditions are more favorable for asphalt work and roadway repairs.
Businesses located near the closure area are expected to remain accessible by foot, although vehicle access may vary depending on construction activity and detour patterns throughout the day.
The paving work is being handled by Timber Mountain, the contractor overseeing the project. Community members seeking additional information regarding the closure or traffic impacts may contact the company directly at (541) 956-8700.
