Three years after a critical early investment helped turn an idea into action, early childhood education in Grants Pass is entering a new phase of growth, shaped by rising demand, expanding family participation, and plans for a second dedicated learning site within the public school system.
The early learning program operated by Grants Pass School District 7 began as a small pilot supported by an initial “seed” contribution from AllCare Health. District officials say that early vote of confidence allowed the program to take root quickly and evolve into a sustainable model that now serves dozens of local families while preparing for further expansion.
As the program enters 2026, enrollment figures point to strong and growing community interest in early childhood services. Playgroup participation has climbed by 66 percent, increasing from 24 families to 40, while district preschool classrooms are now fully enrolled and supported by a substantial waitlist. That growth has prompted the district to begin planning for a second early learning site, targeted to open for the 2027–2028 school year. Initial development will focus on playground construction, followed by classroom preparation and phased enrollment.
District leaders say the expansion is necessary to keep pace with family needs, particularly as many parents continue to face financial barriers when seeking early education opportunities for their children. While Grants Pass has several high-quality private preschool options, tuition costs can put those programs out of reach for a significant portion of the community. The district’s early learning initiative is grounded in the belief that access to high-quality early education should not depend on household income.
To support families preparing for kindergarten, the district will launch a new series of READY! for Kindergarten workshops later this month. The sessions will be held January 20, 21, and 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Highland Elementary School and are designed specifically for District 7 families with children entering kindergarten in fall 2026. The workshops emphasize hands-on learning and intentional play, providing parents and caregivers with tools, toys, and practical strategies to support early academic and social development at home. To remove participation barriers, the district is offering free dinner and childcare for attending families.
In addition to the workshop series, the district’s annual Kindergarten Launch event is scheduled for Thursday, March 5, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event will take place at each child’s home elementary school and serves as the official kindergarten registration opportunity for families across the district.
Ongoing family support is also provided through monthly Strengthening Families workshops, which focus on parenting skills, child development, and family well-being. Information about these sessions is available through the district’s early learning resources.
District officials say the next phase of growth will require broader community involvement. To make the second early learning site a reality, the district is actively seeking additional funding, private donations, and volunteer support. Leaders emphasize that community partnerships will play a critical role in ensuring the program remains accessible and equitable as enrollment continues to rise.
AllCare Health has reaffirmed its support for the district’s early learning efforts, describing the program as aligned with its broader mission to improve health outcomes and promote equity across Southern Oregon. In announcing its continued involvement, the organization stated, “AllCare Health is proud to support the Grants Pass School District Early Learning Program in its mission to enrich early education and family well-being.”
Founded more than 30 years ago, AllCare Health is a physician-owned healthcare organization that provides coordinated health insurance along with primary, behavioral, and dental care services. Governed by a community-member board, the organization has invested heavily in local programs aimed at addressing unmet needs and supporting underserved populations. Its governance practices have earned national recognition, including the Best for the World™ Governance distinction from B Lab™, reflecting an emphasis on accountability and social impact.
With enrollment climbing and expansion plans underway, district leaders say the early learning program is becoming a cornerstone of long-term educational success in Grants Pass, laying the groundwork for healthier families, stronger schools, and a more resilient community.
