A federal grand jury has indicted eight men accused of participating in a coordinated plot to carry out a large-scale attack during a mixed martial arts event held on the White House lawn in June, according to information released by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Federal prosecutors allege the defendants were involved in planning an assault intended to kill government officials and others attending the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Freedom 250 event. The gathering drew senior political figures, invited guests and national attention because of its location on federal property and its connection to the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
The indictment represents a significant expansion of the case. Five men were initially arrested and charged after federal investigators said they uncovered the alleged plan before the event. Three additional defendants were later identified and charged, bringing the total number of accused participants to eight.
All eight men face federal conspiracy charges related to providing material support for terrorism and conspiring to commit murder on federal property. Prosecutors also allege the group intended to target federal officials and other prominent individuals expected to attend the event.
The charges carry severe potential penalties. Depending on the specific counts and any eventual convictions, the defendants could face lengthy federal prison terms, including the possibility of life imprisonment. Among the individuals reportedly considered as possible targets were President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and businessman Elon Musk. Federal authorities have also referred to additional unnamed high-profile targets who were expected to be present or associated with the event.
The investigation involved multiple federal agencies, including the FBI, the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Justice. Officials said the alleged plan was discovered before the event and disrupted before an attack could occur.
The arrests were carried out in several states, reflecting what prosecutors describe as a conspiracy involving participants in different parts of the country. Defendants were taken into custody in locations including Ohio, Missouri, California, Nebraska, Washington and West Virginia.
The case is being handled in federal court in Ohio, where the grand jury returned the indictment. The defendants are expected to appear for arraignments, detention hearings and other preliminary proceedings as prosecutors prepare to present evidence supporting the charges.
Federal prosecutors will be required to establish that the defendants knowingly joined the alleged conspiracy and took actions intended to advance it.
