Federal investigators are continuing to search for the individual or individuals responsible for causing extensive damage to the historic Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial after authorities concluded the landmark’s waterproof liner was intentionally cut, leaving a tear measuring approximately 350 feet beneath one of the nation’s most recognizable monuments.
The damage was discovered only weeks after the Reflecting Pool reopened following a major restoration project that replaced its aging liner and completed a series of long-term improvements designed to preserve the landmark for future generations. What initially appeared to be an isolated maintenance problem quickly became a criminal investigation after inspectors determined the liner had been sliced with what investigators believe was a sharp cutting tool, possibly a box cutter.
The Reflecting Pool has served as one of the defining features of the National Mall for more than a century. Stretching between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, it welcomes millions of visitors each year and has provided the backdrop for presidential ceremonies, national commemorations, civil rights gatherings and countless historic moments in American history. Because of its prominence, damage to the site carries both historical and financial consequences.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the federal government intends to pursue the investigation aggressively and hold those responsible accountable under federal law. Federal officials have characterized the destruction as an intentional act of vandalism involving government property and say the investigation remains an active priority.
Investigators also documented graffiti left in the area, including anti-Trump messages and the marking “8647.” The numbers have attracted national attention because many people interpret them as a political reference to President Donald Trump, the nation’s 47th president. Authorities have acknowledged the graffiti as part of the overall investigation but have not announced separate criminal charges related specifically to the wording that was left behind.
The damage comes at a particularly costly time. The Reflecting Pool had recently completed a multimillion-dollar rehabilitation project that included replacing its waterproof liner, improving drainage systems, repairing aging infrastructure and extending the life of one of the country’s most visited memorials. The restoration was part of broader preservation efforts taking place ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration, making the latest repairs an unexpected expense for federal agencies responsible for maintaining the National Mall.
Engineers are now evaluating the full extent of the damage beneath the pool while investigators continue collecting evidence. Because the waterproof liner is buried beneath the water, repairing it is considerably more complex than addressing surface damage. Portions of the pool must be drained, the damaged material exposed, and specialized repairs completed before the area can be fully restored.
The United States Park Police and the National Park Service continue reviewing surveillance footage from cameras positioned throughout the National Mall while investigators examine physical evidence collected from the scene. Authorities have also encouraged anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity or captured photographs or video near the Reflecting Pool around the time the damage occurred to contact investigators.
Federal officials have confirmed that several arrests have recently been made in connection with separate incidents involving vandalism and unlawful activity throughout the National Mall. Investigators have not said whether those arrests are directly related to the damage at the Reflecting Pool, and no suspects have been publicly identified in this case.
Temporary barriers remain in place around portions of the Reflecting Pool while investigators complete their work and engineers determine the most effective repair strategy. Officials expect restoration work to be coordinated carefully to minimize disruptions during one of the busiest periods of the year, as large crowds prepare to visit Washington for Independence Day celebrations.
For now, investigators remain focused on identifying those responsible for damaging one of the nation’s most recognized landmarks.
