Today the City of Grants Pass is bracing for an increased wildfire risk as temperatures are expected to soar into the triple digits, combined with dry fuel conditions. Starting at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, September 4th, the fire danger level within the city will be raised to “Extreme” (Red).
This change in fire danger level brings stricter fire prevention measures, particularly concerning the use of power-driven equipment. As of Friday, the public is prohibited from using chainsaws, mowers, and other spark-emitting tools, such as wood splitters and generators, in areas with flammable vegetation.
Here are the key restrictions that will be enforced starting Friday:
- Power Saws: The use of power saws in flammable vegetation areas will be completely prohibited.
- Metal Cutting and Grinding: Equipment used for cutting, grinding, or welding metal is banned in areas of flammable vegetation.
- Mowing: Mowing dry or cured grass with power equipment will not be allowed.
- Spark-Emitting Equipment: The use of any spark-emitting equipment with internal combustion engines is prohibited in flammable vegetation areas.
Additionally, the following fire prevention measures remain in effect:
- Open Fires: Wood-fueled campfires, cooking fires, and warming fires are banned except in designated areas approved by the Fire Marshal. However, propane and natural gas-fueled ornamental fires, charcoal barbecues, and wood smokers are permitted.
- Vehicles: Motor vehicles, including motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles, are restricted to improved roads free of flammable vegetation, except for agricultural activities.
- Smoking: Smoking is only allowed in enclosed vehicles, boats on the water, or cleared areas within campsites.
The City Fire Marshal may approve modifications or waivers for these restrictions on a case-by-case basis.
For further details or questions about the new regulations, residents can contact the Fire Prevention Bureau at 541-450-6200. The city urges all residents to adhere to these regulations to help prevent wildfires during this critical period.
