Effective Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 9:00 a.m., the City of Grants Pass has officially reduced its fire danger level to “LOW” (green). This decision follows recent widespread rains that have significantly improved conditions across the region, prompting the Fire Marshal to ease fire prevention regulations. While the lower danger level marks a positive shift, officials urge residents to continue practicing fire safety measures to help prevent potential outbreaks.
Changes to Fire Prevention Rules
With the reduction in fire danger level, several restrictions have been lifted, making certain activities permissible once again. The following activities are now allowed without restriction:
- Power-Driven Machinery: The use of power saws, lawn mowers, and other spark-emitting equipment is permitted. It remains mandatory to have a shovel and a fire extinguisher (at least 8-ounce capacity) on hand when using power saws, along with a minimum one-hour fire watch after use.
- Mowing of Dry Grass: Cutting or trimming dry, cured grass can now resume, along with mowing green or irrigated grass.
- Metal Cutting and Welding: Operations involving the cutting, grinding, or welding of metal are allowed in areas with flammable vegetation, provided that the equipment is used in a cleared space and a charged garden hose or fire extinguisher is immediately accessible.
Fire Safety Practices Still in Effect
Despite the easing of some restrictions, several fire prevention rules remain in place to ensure public safety:
- Outdoor Burning: The burning of debris or open flames, including campfires and warming fires, continues to be prohibited. Wood-fueled fire pits and backyard debris burning remain banned for the duration of the fire season.
- Fireworks Limitations: The use of fireworks is still heavily restricted, with legal fireworks only permitted on July 4th from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Fireworks are entirely banned in specific areas, including locations west of Highland Avenue and Dimmick Street, north of Interstate 5, and all city parks and school properties.
- Smoking Prohibitions: Smoking in areas with flammable vegetation is prohibited under all circumstances.
Ongoing Vigilance Encouraged
The Grants Pass Fire Marshal has reminded residents that while conditions have improved, fire hazards have not been completely eliminated. The recent rains have reduced the risk, but the area remains susceptible to flare-ups, particularly in dry vegetation. Residents are advised to continue exercising caution, particularly when using equipment that could produce sparks or flames.
The City of Grants Pass remains committed to safeguarding the community through adaptive fire management practices. Fire prevention measures will continue to be adjusted as conditions evolve.
