GRANTS PASS, OR — The City of Grants Pass is now accepting applications for an open seat on the Urban Area Planning Commission (UAPC), offering residents the chance to directly participate in shaping the city’s development and land use policies. This voluntary position is a four-year appointment, and all applicants must reside within the city limits or within the designated Urban Growth Boundary.
The UAPC plays a pivotal role in local planning decisions and urban growth strategies. The commission is responsible for reviewing and issuing rulings on Type III Land Use Applications, which include zone changes, subdivisions, Planned Unit Developments (PUDs), and major variances. In addition to reviewing new development proposals, the UAPC also functions as an appellate body for appeals of Type I and Type II planning decisions made by city staff.
The commission’s duties extend beyond individual project oversight. Members are also charged with reviewing and making recommendations to the Grants Pass City Council on Type IV Land Use requests, such as Comprehensive Plan amendments and Development Code text changes. These responsibilities are vital to ensuring that the city’s long-term land use goals are met in a manner consistent with its growth management philosophy.
Commissioners are expected to analyze emerging development trends, assess city infrastructure capacity, and propose adjustments to land use policies when necessary. This work helps ensure that the city remains prepared to meet the needs of current and future residents within the expanding Urban Growth Boundary.
“The Urban Area Planning Commission plays an essential role in how our city grows and adapts,” said a city official. “This is a great opportunity for residents who care about responsible development, sustainable land use, and thoughtful planning.”
Those interested in applying can obtain an application in person at the City Administration Office, located at 101 N.W. A Street, or complete an application online through the city’s website. All applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2025.
Following the submission deadline, applications will be reviewed by the UAPC on Wednesday, August 27. Selected applicants will then be interviewed by the City Council during the Council Workshop on Monday, September 15, with final appointments scheduled for confirmation during the City Council meeting on Wednesday, September 17.
The city encourages individuals with a passion for urban development, public service, or planning policy to apply. Serving on the UAPC provides residents with a meaningful way to contribute to the future of Grants Pass, ensuring growth is managed with foresight, equity, and environmental responsibility.
