The City of Grants Pass is seeking applicants to fill an open position on its Historical Buildings and Sites Commission, offering local business owners an opportunity to participate in decisions that help preserve and protect the community’s historic character.
City officials announced this week that applications are now being accepted for one vacancy on the commission. The available position is designated for an individual who owns a business located within the Central Business District of Grants Pass.
The Historical Buildings and Sites Commission serves an important role in overseeing historic preservation efforts throughout the city and its Urban Growth Boundary. Among its responsibilities is the review of proposed alterations to properties located within designated historic districts as well as structures recognized for their historical significance. The commission also works to encourage preservation initiatives, advise public agencies and organizations on historic preservation matters, and identify locations of archaeological and historical importance.
Through its review process, the commission helps ensure that changes to historic properties are evaluated with consideration for the architectural, cultural, and historical resources that contribute to the community’s identity. Members also provide recommendations and guidance on preservation-related issues that may affect local landmarks and historically significant areas.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and meet the eligibility requirement of owning a business within the city’s Central Business District. Commission members are appointed through a public selection process that includes interviews and final approval by the Grants Pass City Council.
Applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. on Friday, August 7. Following the application deadline, candidates will be interviewed by members of the Historical Buildings and Sites Commission during its meeting scheduled for Thursday, August 13.
Applicants selected to move forward in the process will then be interviewed by the Grants Pass City Council during a council workshop scheduled for Monday, August 31. The final appointment is expected to be made during the City Council meeting on Wednesday, September 2.
The commission provides residents and business owners with a direct opportunity to participate in preserving the architectural heritage and historical resources that reflect the community’s development and growth over time. Members work alongside city staff, preservation advocates, and local stakeholders to evaluate projects and provide recommendations that help balance preservation goals with ongoing community development.
Applications are available through the City of Grants Pass Administration Office at City Hall, located at 101 N.W. A Street, and may also be completed online through the city’s committee and commission appointment application portal.
City officials encourage qualified business owners interested in local history, preservation, and community service to apply before the August deadline.
