The City of Grants Pass is accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the Historical Buildings and Sites Commission, an advisory body responsible for protecting and guiding the preservation of historically significant properties within the community.
The open position is designated for a business owner operating within the city’s Central Business District and will run through December 7, 2026. City officials are seeking an applicant who can contribute professional insight and local perspective to decisions involving the preservation and stewardship of Grants Pass’ historic character.
The Historical Buildings and Sites Commission plays an active role in reviewing proposed alterations to structures located within recognized Historic Districts and to individually designated historic buildings inside the city’s Urban Growth Boundary. The commission also works to promote historic preservation awareness, coordinate with public agencies on preservation-related matters, and help identify buildings, sites, and areas of archaeological significance throughout the community.
Members serve as advisors to city leadership while balancing economic development, property use, and preservation goals. The commission’s work often involves evaluating how modernization projects, renovations, and structural changes can move forward while maintaining architectural integrity and historical value.
Eligibility requirements are straightforward. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and must own a business located within the Central Business District of Grants Pass. The city encourages qualified business owners with an interest in local history, downtown development, and community planning to participate in the appointment process.
Applications are available at the City Administration Office, located at 101 N.W. A Street, or may be completed online by selecting click here to access the official application form.
Completed applications must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2026. Following the submission deadline, applicants will participate in a two-step review process. Candidates will first be interviewed by the Historical Buildings and Sites Commission during its regular meeting scheduled for Thursday, April 9, 2026. Finalists will then appear before the Grants Pass City Council at a City Council Workshop on Monday, May 4, 2026.
The City Council is expected to make the official appointment during its regular meeting on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
The vacancy provides an opportunity for a downtown business owner to directly participate in shaping how Grants Pass preserves its architectural heritage while continuing to evolve as a modern Southern Oregon community. Service on the commission allows members to influence long-term planning decisions affecting historic neighborhoods, cultural landmarks, and the visual identity of the city’s urban core.
