Illinois Valley High School (IVHS) has announced the appointment of Erik Lathen as its new principal. Erik, a familiar face in the Illinois Valley, brings a wealth of experience and deep community ties to the role. Superintendent Valenzuela expressed excitement over Erik’s return, highlighting his prior work at IVHS and his longstanding connection to the area. Valenzuela emphasized Erik’s commitment to making a lasting positive impact on both the students and the broader community.
Though new to the principal position at IVHS, Erik is no stranger to the district. For the past seven years, he served as the principal at NVHS. His roots in the Illinois Valley run deep, with his father having been a teacher at IVHS in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and Erik himself attended Evergreen in the early 1980s. He also previously held the roles of Vice Principal and Athletic Director at IVHS from 2012 to 2015.
Erik’s journey in education began as a basketball coach, where he discovered his passion for making a positive impact on students. Reflecting on his growth as an educator, he noted how rewarding it was to influence students’ lives. His transition into administration was driven by a desire to extend that impact beyond the classroom and the basketball court. Erik also expressed his appreciation for working as part of a team in education, valuing the collaboration with experts to drive a school toward success.
Now returning to the Illinois Valley, Erik sees this move as a “mini homecoming” and is eager to reconnect with the community. He is especially excited to reunite with staff members who were present a decade ago. A self-proclaimed foodie, Erik also plans to explore the local restaurant scene in the Illinois Valley area.
