Grants Pass, OR — A long-standing community program that has helped thousands of Josephine County residents prepare and file their taxes is stepping into a new era of independence. JOCO VITA, formerly affiliated with AARP and UCAN, has officially been recognized as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization by both the State of Oregon and the Internal Revenue Service.
The move marks a significant milestone in the organization’s history, granting it full local governance and the ability to expand beyond the seasonal scope of its past operations. For years, JOCO VITA has provided free tax preparation to seniors and low- to moderate-income residents. Now, with nonprofit status, the group says it can grow those services to meet the broader needs of Southern Oregon’s senior and underserved communities year-round.
Program Coordinator Kathie Saunders described the change as a major opportunity for the organization to secure funding from a wider range of sources, form new partnerships, and enhance the services available to residents. Independent nonprofit status means JOCO VITA can now make strategic decisions locally without relying on the directives of outside organizations, allowing for faster response to community needs.
While the group’s mission remains the same—offering accurate, confidential, and always free tax assistance—its operations are poised to expand. New programs are expected to focus on financial literacy, taxpayer education, and targeted outreach for populations that often face barriers in accessing tax services. The organization also hopes to grow its volunteer base to meet anticipated demand.
The numbers from last season reflect the scope of JOCO VITA’s impact. In 2024, volunteers filed 1,455 tax returns electronically and served 2,082 individuals. Those efforts brought $1.8 million in refunds back to the community, along with more than $520,000 in new money from government tax credits. By providing these services free of charge, the group estimates it saved taxpayers over $327,000 in preparation fees.
Residents in need of assistance can now seek help from JOCO VITA volunteers throughout the year, not just during tax season. The organization is already inviting new volunteers to join its ranks, promising training and support for those who want to help their neighbors navigate often-complex tax issues.
For taxpayers, this shift could mean shorter wait times, more appointment availability, and expanded services beyond filing returns—such as guidance on responding to IRS notices, amending past returns, or accessing credits that can improve financial stability. For the broader community, it means another local nonprofit rooted in Josephine County’s needs and priorities, keeping decision-making close to home.
JOCO VITA’s new website, www.jocovita.org, provides a central hub for information, appointments, and volunteer opportunities. Residents can also reach the group by email at inquire@jocovita.org or by phone and text at (541) 375-0204.
With its new status and renewed mission, JOCO VITA aims to remain a trusted resource for Josephine County taxpayers—helping residents keep more of their hard-earned money and ensuring access to essential financial services, all without the cost.
