Boatnik brought me back out for another local food adventure, but this time I got to experience it alongside my podcast partner and best friend, JP. As we continue building Dadcast and creating more community-focused content, one thing remains important to both of us: supporting local organizations and the people making a difference throughout Southern Oregon.
During our visit, we stopped by Joe’s Place, a nonprofit food booth dedicated to helping kids in our community. Beyond serving great food, their mission is what truly stands out. Every purchase helps support local youth programs, which makes grabbing a meal there mean a little bit more than just another stop at Boatnik.
I ordered the tri tip sandwich, which delivered a great smoky flavor with just the right amount of spice. The meat was tender, flavorful and cooked perfectly, while the sweet barbecue sauce tied everything together and gave the sandwich a really satisfying finish. It was the kind of meal that instantly feels like classic fair food done right.
JP decided to go with the tri tip sundae, a layered combination of mashed potatoes, cheese, tri tip and barbecue sauce that looked every bit as good as it sounded. After seeing it in person, it was easy to understand why it has become one of the more unique food items people have been talking about around Boatnik this year. It perfectly blended comfort food with bold barbecue flavor and definitely stood out from the typical festival menu options.
One thing that continues to make Boatnik special every year is the way local organizations, businesses and volunteers come together to create something bigger than just an event. Everywhere you walk, there is another booth, another local business or another group working hard to support the community while giving families a place to gather and enjoy the holiday weekend.
The Active Club deserves a tremendous amount of credit for continuing to organize one of the largest events in Oregon while also giving back to children and families throughout Southern Oregon. From the food vendors and parade to the races and community atmosphere, Boatnik continues to bring people together in a way few events in the region can.
For JP and me, experiences like this are exactly why supporting local matters. Great food, good people and a community coming together for a meaningful cause is what Boatnik is all about. Joe’s Place was another reminder that sometimes the best meals are the ones connected to something bigger than the food itself.
