The Rogue River will see heightened enforcement and temporary closures this weekend as Josephine County prepares for the annual Labor Day Races. The Josephine County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol has announced detailed restrictions on water use during the two-day event, which will take place August 30 and 31, 2025. The closures are designed to keep both racers and spectators safe while allowing emergency crews clear access to the water.
On Saturday, August 30, the Rogue River between Matson Park and Griffin Park will be closed to all private boat traffic during official practice runs. The closure will remain in place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Only law enforcement vessels, rescue personnel, and authorized race officials will be allowed to move on the water in that stretch during the designated hours.
The following day, Sunday, August 31, the restrictions will expand to a different portion of the river as racing gets underway. From Baker Park to Griffin Park, the waterway will close one hour prior to the scheduled start of competition and remain restricted throughout the races, which are expected to run from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Spectators will be required to remain at least 50 feet away from the riverbank while events are active.
To ensure compliance, all recreational users must clear the water at least one hour before each closure takes effect. Race officials and sheriff’s deputies will monitor shoreline areas where spectators may anchor boats, but only if the locations are determined to be safe. The Sheriff’s Office has emphasized that private boats will not be permitted to assist in any crash or rescue situations. Those operations are reserved for trained crews to prevent additional hazards during emergencies.
Violations of the closure rules could carry steep consequences. Any unauthorized vessel found on the water during the restricted periods may face citations for reckless or unsafe operation under Oregon Revised Statutes 830.315 and 830.305. Such violations could result in fines of up to $440. To reinforce safety measures, law enforcement units will maintain a visible presence along the river throughout the weekend.
The closures are intended not only to provide a safe environment for participants but also to protect the public from the risks inherent in high-speed racing on the Rogue. The event draws significant local attention each year, with crowds gathering along the shoreline to watch the competition. Officials are urging spectators to plan ahead, secure safe viewing spots away from the river’s edge, and avoid attempting to use personal watercraft during the scheduled closures.
The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office has provided a contact number for questions regarding the event and related river restrictions. Residents and visitors may call the office directly at (541) 474-5123 for additional details. With careful planning and cooperation, officials believe the Labor Day Races can be enjoyed as a highlight of the holiday weekend while maintaining public safety and order on the water.
