It takes a mass to move a mountain. One man alone can push, pull, yell, and strain, but that mountain won’t budge an inch unless the community decides to move it together. Josephine County and Grants Pass have reached a critical crossroad, and there’s no time left for fence-sitting. Either this community finds its voice and stands shoulder to shoulder, or it falls further into division, apathy, and chaos.
For too long, we’ve let ourselves be herded into corners by colors, parties, and labels. Blue. Red. Liberal. Conservative. City. County. Us. Them. It’s childish. At the end of the day, we are not blue and red. We are not divided into neat little boxes of men versus women, left versus right. We are human beings living in the same towns, driving the same streets, raising families under the same roofs, and facing the same problems. The only thing keeping us from fixing those problems is our refusal to communicate like rational adults.
Every day, I watch people bicker over party lines, attack neighbors on social media, and twist legitimate issues into playground insults. The level of discourse has fallen so low that real conversations about real issues can barely survive a single sentence before they dissolve into finger-pointing. If you can’t sit down with someone you disagree with and speak like an adult, the problem isn’t them—it’s you.
Right now, both city and county governments are being run like private fiefdoms. Decisions are made behind closed doors, public comment is treated like background noise, and elected officials behave as if they answer to no one. They have forgotten that they work for the people who put them there. And do you know why they’ve gotten away with it? Because the community has been too busy arguing with itself to hold them accountable.
This newspaper cannot do it alone. I cannot do it alone. One man shouting from the page won’t fix a broken system. Change only happens when the people of this county stand together—not as partisans, not as factions, but as a united community that demands better.
The time has come to grow up. Put aside the childish antics, the Facebook feuds, and the petty grudges. Start showing up. Start speaking up. Start acting like adults who care about the future of their home. Because if you don’t—if you continue down this path of division and silence—then when this community finally crumbles, you’ll have no one to blame but yourselves.
This is your home. Take it back, together.
