When the newly elected officials of Josephine County swept into office, they made promises — big ones. They spoke of change, of unity, of cleaning up the mess their predecessors allegedly left behind. They painted themselves as the fresh start we so desperately needed, the cavalry riding in to save a community weary from years of political dysfunction.
And yet, here we are.
It hasn’t taken long for the people of Josephine County to realize that the old adage “monkey see, monkey do” is alive and well in our halls of government. The faces may have changed, but the mentality has not. In fact, it’s become even more blatant: rules for thee, none for me. Grandstanding has replaced leadership. Political theater has replaced service. Promises of a “new era” have given way to the same old drama we’ve come to expect — only now dressed up with buzzwords and pre-rehearsed public statements.
Let’s be clear: fixing a problem only after relentless public pressure doesn’t earn you a medal. It doesn’t absolve you of the months — or years — you ignored it. It doesn’t mean the people trust you now. It simply means you finally acknowledged you were boxed into a corner and had no choice but to act.
Trust isn’t given freely; it’s earned through consistent, selfless leadership. It’s earned when our leaders put the people before their own political interests, not when they throw us a bone after months of avoidance and denial. Posturing and pandering do not replace hard work and true accountability.
We were promised a change. What we’ve received instead is a continuation of ego-driven politics wrapped in the tired excuse that “these things take time.” No, what takes time is rebuilding trust once it’s been broken. What shouldn’t take time is listening to the will of the people and responding with urgency and respect.
It’s not just the decisions that have been disappointing. It’s the way they’re delivered — through heavily scripted public hearings where real questions are either dodged or answered with platitudes. These meetings feel less like public service and more like political theater, complete with staged performances and pre-approved talking points. It’s an insult to the intelligence of the very people these officials claim to serve.
Josephine County residents are not fools. We recognize the difference between genuine leadership and self-serving ambition. And we are growing tired of watching yet another group of elected officials treat public office like a stage for their own self-promotion rather than a platform for real, meaningful change.
Here’s a reality check for every elected official who thinks a few quick-fixes or press releases are enough: the people are watching. Closely. And we will continue to hold you accountable. You were not elected to lord over us, to disregard our concerns, or to prioritize your political careers over the health of this community. You were elected to work for us.
You campaigned on the promise of change. It’s time you start acting like it.
It’s time you stop disrespecting us with cookie-cutter meetings and hollow performances. It’s time you start leading with integrity, humility, and a true commitment to service. It’s time you start remembering who put you in those seats — and who can just as easily remove you from them.
The people of Josephine County deserve better — and we won’t stop demanding it.
Do better. We’re waiting.
