I pulled into Pennington Farms with one simple goal in mind. I needed a few jars of spicy jelly to experiment with for some upcoming specials at The Meltdown, and I figured I’d be in and out in just a few minutes. Like so many “quick stops,” though, this one didn’t go quite as planned.
The moment I stepped through the front door, the aroma of fresh baking filled the air. It’s the kind of smell that’s almost impossible to ignore. Warm butter, fresh pastry, and baked bread have a way of convincing you that whatever you originally came for can wait just a little longer.
As I looked over the bakery case, one item immediately caught my attention: a ham and cheese turnover. It looked too good to pass up, so I added it to my purchase, and I’m glad I did.
The first bite confirmed I had made the right decision. The pastry was beautifully layered and wonderfully flaky without being dry or crumbly. Every bite had that rich, buttery flavor you hope for in a well-made turnover. Inside, the ham and cheese filling was warm, savory, and satisfying without being overly heavy. There was nothing complicated about it, and that’s exactly what made it so enjoyable. Sometimes simple food, prepared well with quality ingredients, is every bit as memorable as an elaborate meal.
While I enjoyed my lunch, I spent more time browsing the store, and that’s when I realized Pennington Farms offers much more than baked pastries. Shelves were filled with locally produced products, specialty foods, homemade jams and jellies, sauces, preserves, and a wide assortment of baked treats that make it difficult to leave with only what you originally intended to buy.
For anyone who appreciates supporting local agriculture and locally made products, Pennington Farms offers a shopping experience that’s as enjoyable as the food itself. Instead of rushing through the store, it’s worth taking your time to see what’s available because there’s a good chance you’ll discover something new with every visit.
Of course, I still picked up the spicy jellies I came for, and I’m looking forward to experimenting with them in some future menu creations at The Meltdown. But if I’m being honest, that turnover ended up being the highlight of the trip.
Places like Pennington Farms remind me why I enjoy exploring local businesses throughout Southern Oregon. There’s something rewarding about finding quality food made with care by people who clearly take pride in what they do. It’s a refreshing change from grabbing another meal from a national chain, and experiences like this are exactly why I enjoy sharing these discoveries with readers.
One thing I especially appreciated was that nothing felt rushed or mass-produced. From the bakery to the locally sourced products lining the shelves, the entire market has a welcoming atmosphere that encourages you to slow down, browse, and enjoy the experience. It’s easy to see why so many people make Pennington Farms a regular stop, whether they’re picking up fresh produce, homemade treats, gifts, or simply enjoying lunch from the bakery.
Needless to say, I’ll be back. There are still plenty of baked goods I haven’t tried, more local products to explore, and another ham and cheese turnover waiting for me. The spicy jellies I originally came for will certainly find their way into some future specials at The Meltdown, but next time I’ll be giving myself a little more time to look around.
If you haven’t visited Pennington Farms recently, it’s worth the trip. Just don’t be surprised if you walk in planning to buy one thing and leave with a bag full of fresh bakery items, locally made products, and a reason to start planning your next visit before you’ve even pulled out of the parking lot.
